Little Big Soldier

It's kind of sad that there was only a brief window of time where big names in Chinese cinema garnered enough attention to become stars in Hollywood as well, yet only a decade afterward, Chinese cinema has gained enough traction to buy them back for their own humdrum outings. Chan's old enough at this point that he can't carry a movie on his trademark slapstick-fu anymore, and this script doesn't give him a lot to work with, although as a dramatic actor, he's beginning to look like a dark horse.

Probably the oddest JC movie i've seen, at its heart this is a road trip film and Jackie Chan's charisma really shines in this. This has all his usual trademarked slapstick but there's a bit more of a bittersweet tone than his other films. The action choreography was adequate. What makes this film decent is the simply gorgeous settings and good cinematography. The story is a letdown though. Style over substance but interesting enough.

Jackie tries too hard to be funny, but the film still works: the plot, in which he took some liberties with history, is beautifully shot and coherently finished.

The thing about Little Big Soldier is that it didn't seem to know what kind of movie it is. It was a pretty good drama and a not so bad comedy but the two didn't seem to mix very well. However Jackie Chan's acting was marvelous.

Without pathos there is no slapstick.

If Jackie Chan character was more serious I would have liked his more. The comedy was bad but I liked most of the action.

A simple Jackie Chan film, but I have a soft spot for his films.

Great tale, beautiful scenery, Chan in his natural elements, great fight scenes. This movie has it all, AND morals.
