Little Men

The film does an incredible shop of balancing adult and child perspectives, keeping the respective sides apart yet letting the audience into both.

A splendid drama packed with realistic, everyday conflicts which span ages, race and social class. The titular young men give the film an adolescent energy which keeps the scenes flowing, while the adults give mature, believable performances. The film is also shot in a beautiful springtime light and shows off a few parts of Brooklyn nicely. All in all, an enjoyable, well-balanced drama with a strong script and acting. Because it's indie with few big names, it will be overlooked at awards season.

Want to see two young actors give breakthrough performances? Then watch in Little Men, an intimate gem of a film directed by Ira Sachs, which means they're in the best of caring hands. What Sachs and cowriter Mauricio Zacharias, who collaborated with the filmmaker on the gay-themed dramas Keep the Lights On and Love Is Strange, conjure up here is a serious pleasure, filled with messily human characters whose thoughts and feelings don't necessarily emerge from the words they speak.

The acting is really good, but the plot is infinitesimal, and the story ultimately felt less than fully developed. So I agree with Rex Reed from New York Observer that "[i]t doesn't eventually add up to much", but I didn't share his experience of being "touched in unexpected places"...
