I've seen you so many times before gangster film, but I haven't seen that many people shot in the face in a 2ish hour run time.

I'm always down for some Roaring Twenties Gangster Shit, and I suppose this delivered. But it always feels like a few abbreviated seasons of Notquite Boardwalk Empire. I liked the cast, the setting, and there's a few decent characters to be found; Fanning especially surprised me. But it's never very gripping, we're rushing through the contents (3 years of prison happens in-between scenes) and the climax fell flat. Competent, yet far from refreshing.

The film is okay. I mean it's not terrible by any stretch, but it doesn't have any spark or appeal. It's just an okay gangster film. It's probably my own expectation of the film though, as I expected more from a "Ben Affleck directed film". His previous work has all been very entertaining. This one just kind cruises along and again, whilst watchable, it's totally unmemorable.

I'll be honest, I see a lot of hate put on this movie, but its really not that bad. Sure its not a classic gangster movie, but even good gangster movies are few and far in between these days. It's a pretty good show, and an easy recommendation if you don't know what to watch one night. Cute story, nice acting, awesome direction, might have been better if it were the full cut.

When I thought about it a little I realized it's probably the worst movie of Affleck's directing career, but I still liked it a fair bit! It was a little overstuffed, felt a little long since it dragged occasionally, the last 10-15 minutes were rushed and over-the-top, like he just needed to put more in it, but as a whole it explores familiar territory with some flair and intelligence.

I like Affleck as an actor I'm just not 100% on board with his directing. There is some beautiful visual work in parts tho. Well worn territory but it had a bit of a spin to it. Much better than that dreck Lawless from a couple years back.

Ben Affleck's tribute to old-school Warner brothers gangster pictures may lack the white heat of the Cagney-Bogart era, but Live By Night still gets in its stylish licks.

Gets a mild thumbs up, because even bad pizza is okay. Gangster movies are like pizza to me.

I don't think Affleck should act & direct.

Live By Night is a good movie that struggles to live up to its potential thanks to a cut-down version of what we can only suspect was, at one point, at least 30 minutes longer. That doesn't make it bad, but instead of feeling like a fully realized portrait of this man's life, it feels instead like a greatest hits compilation. Every scene is good but the film as a whole doesn't add up to what it should. Still, I'm calling it another win in the directorial career of Ben Affleck.

Affleck's most assured and confident directorial effort to date is a sumptuous tribute to Cagney era gangster films; though the pacing occasionally slackens, and the screenplay is stuffed with too many characters, a fine cast highlighted by Fanning, Saldana and Cooper, makes this a smooth and enjoyable journey. Gunfight denouement falls a little flat.

The action is visceral, and I like the 1920s design, but there is hardly any momentum or coherent story.

Its certainly watchable if you can get past the corny accents(!) but there are def. some cliches (I wasn't keen on the female characters). Still, its not un-entertaining regardless. Its alright - not one I'd recommend you go out of your way i.e. pay much to see but its an ok watch, not a complete failure but its not great either. There are some good bits of dialogue and it paints the scene of criminality in America at the time of the prohibition era relatively well, so it could be worse.

Interesting story and good action but ultimately not very engaging.

Ended up kind of enjoying this after the eyerollin inducing trailer. There's some beautiful visual moments in here that makes it clear Affleck knows what he's doing, but he needs to not tread such well worn areas.

Great crime drama, starring, written by, and directed by Ben Affleck.

An utterly pointless movie about a "good guy" gangster. Or something. Mostly it's a bunch of shooting and Affleck failing in every way.

Solid all around but doesn't wrap up its potential. The score was beautiful but was in the wrong movie. Overall an uneven experience that passes the time. *Okay

Ben Affleck goes to 1920s Florida to run rum and kick ass in a $90 million gangster film shot on Panavision. Beautiful.

So yesterday I watched Live By Night. I'm trying really hard, but cannot remember anything positive worth mentioning about it. Screw you Ben Botox, you made me a dull boy, throwing two hours of my life away I will never get back.

I wasn't feeling this. Terrible performance from Ben Affleck. I'm not even sure what this was supposed to be. It's like a gangster film in fantasy land where all the rough shit was pure romance.

It's a solid gangster flick, with a few tricks up its sleeve, some swagger, a melancholic backbone, and some standout scenes. I wish it had more charm, or more humanity, or more internal conflict, or more of something. It's paint by numbers at times, but it succeeds enough at its lofty expectations of a gangster epic.

As a huge fan of director Ben Affleck, this movie was disappointing. I think he didn't quite decide on what to tell, this is partly cause this is a book adaptation tho. The story was all over the place.

Disclaimer that I didn't watch the whole movie, but need to pad out my lower tiers. The first 10mins of this were very cheesy/ham-fisted and I couldn't take the premise/characters seriously.
