There’s some great stuff here - especially the visuals and Nighy’s performance - but it’s largely unremarkable. The story translates well to 1950s stiff upper lip British society, but overall the movie doesn’t do very much to distinguish itself so ends up just kind of existing. It really was damn pretty though which I didn’t expect at all

An achingly empathetic drum-tight performance from Nighy makes this a must-see (the croak of his voice is painful to listen to for the emotions it represses), but like Kurosawa’s original, there are some weaknesses to the material that rob the film of greater impact, especially the hideously clunky exposition drop in the final act, which keeps Nighy off-stage while the remaining cast talk about him. Convincing (and luscious) throwback to 50s film-making in style and décor is a definite plus.

This remake of a true masterpiece is only really really good. Nighy's performance deserves all the praise it's getting. It's subtle and thoughtful and avoids mawkish sentiment at every turn. The key scene with Aimee Lou Wood that sets up the final act is probably the best work he's ever done.

This material feels a lot more trite when Kurosawa isn’t directing it. Nothing here quite finds the right pitch; score, cinematography, performances, screenplay - it’s all a bit mushy and never really allows the raw poignancy of the material to break through in the way the 1952 original does. The last scene in particular, featuring a silly and ostensibly-weepy monologue while Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis blares through the speakers, feels outright ridiculous.

Pretty good for a remake but not on the same level as the original

Superbly made. The photography is great and I especially loved the misguiding character reveal at the beginning, which turns out not that misguiding in the end; the dialogues carry you away and the themes are very touching; the wonderful Bill Nighy gives a fantastic, career-defining performance, and Aimee Lou Wood is also excellent; the main character is exquisitely depicted and explored throughout as evidenced by the emotional intensity the film's crescendi manage to reach. Deeply moving.

It's just Ikiru in a western setting. Luckily Ikiru is a great movie.

Years back I had the good fortune of attending a screening of Ikiru hosted by Roger Ebert. He introduced it as the rare film that could turn those who watch it into better people. And if any film could make that claim it’s Ikiru, which depicts leading a good and meaningful life as hard work, but also the only work that matters. Driven by Nighy’s moving, understated work, Living’s faithfulness to Kurosawa’s film allows it both to echo that feeling while making it feel timeless.

Touching, while mostly avoiding being overbearing - some of the scenes do feel a little over-dramatic, but it maintained a fairly consistent tone throughout, and I was surprised that it was able to keep me guessing where it was going for so long. I really enjoyed the progression of Bill Nighy's character and his choices in activities and what he explores after receiving his diagnosis, and he gives a great performance.

Well, you could never criticise Nighy for overacting, that's for sure! Whilst I am in 2 minds whether to applaud someone for finally realising that true happiness can reside in helping others, I feel it is somehow tempered by a wasted lifetime of procrastination and deliberate filibuster. That said, this was peak Nighy. Just mesmerising!! The ability to not do or move anything and still say so much is incredible. The film threatened to go of the rails, but happily, it came to a lovely conclusion

I had no idea going into this that it was based on one of my favorite movies of all time. And man, does it live up to the original. Bill Nighy gives the performance of a lifetime, introducing audiences to a story that deserves all the recognition it can get.

A really touching and magnificently-shot film. Nighy gave a tremendous performance that moved the entire theater and brought many to tears.

Hayatınızın son anlarını nasıl yaşardınız? Anı yaşayamayanların hikayesi. Bayındırlık bakanlığında çalışan memurumuz, 4 korkan arkadaşıyla çalışmaktadır. 1 gün doktorunun sadece 6 ay yaşayacağını öğrenir. Hayatı sorgulamaya başlar. Bill Nighy'in harika oynadığı film, akıcı kurgusu, metaforları ve kostümleriyle de izletiyor. Güzel 1 hikaye. Naif 1 film. Filmin sonunda, Mr. Harris'in Oyun Parkı. Yaşadım mı öldüm mü anlayamadım.

Not having seen the original, I could still feel the influence of Kurosawa's tender pacing. At first I wasn't sure what to make of the way the last act of the film was handled, but ultimately there were a few late scenes that tore me to shreds.

This is a very good remake of Ikiru. Not that it needed a remake, but how can I argue with one that does it so well?

A quietly musing film-it has a strange feel to it a blend of English 50’s period drama and the pace of a Japanese existential movie.

"Living" is a beautifully executed film that manages to capture the nuances of life, death, and regret in a thoughtful and moving way. While it may not be perfect, it is a must-see for fans of independent cinema and those looking for a heartfelt exploration of what it means to truly live.

Well stylish, well acted. But perhaps a little too subtle for its own good, because I was struggling to get the feel for his frustration and illness, wherein laid the entire story.
