Not too much more than a ham-fisted love story. I imagine the attention it's received has a great deal to do with the early use of sound, and, more importantly, the creative and generous application of special techniques and effects. These are genuinely arresting at times, particularly the excellent tintwork. However, the way that sound is so randomly misapplied is an early clue that this film going to take you on a grand carnival tour of the most up-to-date effects without any substance at all.

A bag full of tricks to invigorate a simple-minded romance. It is an energetic film, aesthetically uninhibited, but less gifted in the language of love than of cinema.

The story is pretty lacking, but still comes across sincere. But the colours absolutely make this film what it is. Creative use of hand tinting, especially on the roller coaster. Against the black and white, it really makes those moments feel magical.

The opening tenderly lays out a portrait of the two main characters and the moments of loneliness themselves are so beautifully and truthfully captured. The middle section is incredibly fun - you kind of get swept away by it all, and that the camera often puts you right in the midst of the bustling crowd, with all manner of things and people and rides moving across the screen, certainly helps in this regard (and many of the images are very beautiful). I found the ending very affecting.

Without question one of the more enjoyable silent films I've watched - not that I have all that much to compare to. The two main leads were great, and maybe the two added scenes of dialogue helped out? They did really feel like they were tacked on at the end, but I wasn't all that affected by it. Some fantastic editing and a fun carnival setting with tons of extras for the climax. Really well done.
At a brisk 69 minutes, I would certainly watch this film again.

Charming little romance. It may follow predictable beats but the way the characters are drawn overcomes most of its issues and the minimal intertitles gives it a very unique feel. The cinematography is good, until a thrilling roller coaster scene pushes into great, and it remains so from there to the end.

Unfortunately, they don't lose each other until late in the film, and most of it is so dull I was itching for both of them to promptly get struck by lightning by the time it happened. There is very little dialogue but here is a sample just to give you an idea of how lame it is. He: "Have you ever imagined a simple worker like me, talking about love?" - she in response: "Let's have fun! I like this".
