Besides its richness as a piece of experimental film and a political essay (implicit, after all, in the film's shots is who gets to move through these spaces, and in what capacity - which Benning is sure to remind us with twin shots of a prison and an assembly of cops), it's just a beautiful depiction of Los Angeles in a way we don't typically see.

Viewed February 3, 2022. City of the doomed. James Benning's portrait of Los Angeles captures the many contradictions that form this strange city: the clash between man and nature that serves as its foundation, the image of wealth and glamour it holds and the labor that keeps it afloat. Hollywood doesn't make an appearance, but so many other institutions do - I was particularly struck by a shot of the LAPD standing around confused while off-screen, protestors call them fascists.
