This was the first feature length drama directed by an African-American woman. Had she had the opportunity to make more films after this one, I think she could have been sort of a black, female John Cassavetes. But she was a black woman in America, so she did not.

This mellow editing work itself has a great latino-jazzy rhythm with smooth spaces of relief. It's just floating over several lines as if there is a large dance floor under the script papers. This is lovely, rich and gentle. Sad to not be able to see more of Collins' work.

even though the way in which the film treats the characters as abstractions may feel a little raw from time to time, it also works to its advantage as the text gets layered through that - seemingly separate human faculties were joy to watch once I realized the story is more of a thinking method for collins. rather than a plot-driven narrative, the film sets a mood and expects you to participate in its process. it's a fascinating character study in that regard.

Fairly unconventional in many respects, but this doesn't resolve itself into anything that could be called a 'vision', instead coming off as a mildly interesting, unfocused amateur movie. The meta-textual elements are pretty intriguing and might be the best aspects of the film.

Very impressive movie. Deft and thoughtful portrayal of a bourgeois black couple's troubled marriage and interior lives.

Periodically good but somewhat amateurish/student film feeling project. It's not bad, but I didn't think a ton of it.
