I empathize with the pain and anger of the real people behind the true story, but I don't think the conclusion of this movie offered us anything that warrants a movie. Seeing the trailers, I thought this was going to be a murder mystery version of Erin Brockovich, but it steers away from that direction.

Handsomely shot and well acted, Lost Girls fails in that it is far less gripping than it should be. Amy Ryan is always great and, now, Thomasin McKenzie seems to be shaping into quite the powerhouse, but the events surrounding them don't carry the emotional weight that they should. And where do we finally get to? Very little is elucidated, which obviously is a peril of making a movie about this subject matter.

At the end credits I realized this is based on a true story. If I had known this before it wouldn't have made a lot of difference. The story is going nowhere.

Pretty by the numbers, expository but straightforward and to-the-guts in its portrait of a flawed mother searching for her missing older daughter -- her body, actually -- and all that comes with it -- a lot of pain given that she and other girls found dead were sex workers and are treated as mere Jane Does by reporters and cops. I like some of the shallow focus shots and the overall sense of neverending despair. Too bad it feels so rushed.

It doesn't want to sensationalize a horrible true story so it gets lost between a drama and a thriller. And it doesn't really work.

Has all the tact and sophistication of a ham dildo. Amy Ryan and Thomasin McKenzie are wasted on a script with so much to tell you and so little to say. Frantic, mechanical, boring.

Lost Girls is an intriguing and heartbreaking tale of serial murder. I only wish that there were more breadcrumbs left behind in this true story.

The true story bit at the end has emotional oomph but I mean, it's real life so yeah. The rest of the movie can't really build its own emotional power so it ends up being a bit of a bore. Doesn't do much, Mari isn't that sympathetic (even considering the circumstances). A few cool, but subtle, shots encapsulate the mood visually of the characters involved and their interactions, and Ryan pulled her weight... but that's really it. Even McKenzie, who I like, was too soft in her delivery.

This is one of those "solid without being great" films. Features great performances and an intriguing story, but the main issue for me is the frustration at the way the story goes. This is no doubt the point and how we should empathise with the characters, but it does not make for satisfying viewing.
