Lost Horizon

It's just as bad as everyone says. Pauline Kael: "Its Shangri-La is about as alluring as Forest Lawn. Inhabitants might be driven to slide down the mountains to the nearest Sin City. The narrative has no energy, and the pauses for the pedagogic songs are so awkward you may feel that the director's wheelchair needs oiling."

Musicalizations of classic films are a dicey proposition to begin with, but a musical with horrible music is as DOA as they come, and the Burt Bacharach/Hal David score for LOST HORIZON (a couple of catchy melodies aside) is pretty horrible; mushy ballads, clunky lyrics, etc. And what comes between the songs isn't much better. The story is thin, with some incredibly dated racist subtexts; the actors seem mostly helpless (and hopeless); and at 149 minutes, it's almost unwatchably boring.

Badly conceived MUSICAL remake of the 30's flick. I was forced to see this on the big screen back in 1973... I should get therapy now
