Always one of his more opaque albums, the live version is an upgrade, because it opens up the clunky beats and stuffy atmosphere to a dynamic band setting. Unfortunately Schnabel buries it under diffuse images that put the whole affair right back into a 60s art-school context.

Schnabel is not exactly the ideal interpreter of Lou Reed's Berlin-years anguish. And the Berlin songs themselves don't transport one into that experience so much as convey a once-novel attitude.
