This movie is introduced by director Terry Zwigoff ("Crumb") as a search for 1930s bluesman Howard "Louie Bluie" Armstrong and the style of music known as "string-blues. However, it rapidly evolves into more than the average documentary on music. (myself)

Zwigoff brought me to this but unless you're a fan of old country-blues this is a slog. It's performances strung together w/ Bluie either hanging out w/ seniors who don't speak/are hard to understand or sharing old anecdotes that aren't particularly funny or historically insightful. Only 3 moments interested me: watching Bluie play w/ 2 seniors who don't look too far from Jim Crow; his mocking of modern art; & his Crumb-like Porn Bible, which looked infinitely more interesting than this film.

(Viewed on 20/03/11): Zwigoff has a real knack for getting beneath the skin of his subjects, and while L.B isn't as definitive as Crumb, it's a fascinating tour through a lost African-American artform (string blues) from a bygone era. Like Crumb, it's also a glimpse into the life and craft of an eccentric outsider artist who is completely candid about his perverse sexual proclivities. Thankfully Armstrong is an expert raconteur who would be compelling just reading the phone book. A minor gem.

The film embodiment of "old age is just a state of mind". Howard Armstrong is a true renaissance man- a musician of many instruments, a fond partaker of various cultures, a self taught artist and sharp dresser with a poison tongue. It would be another 20 years before his passing, but the life shown up to this point in the movie is already rich with experience and knowledge. Some people sit around their whole lives while others do it all. I know who I'd prefer to be.

If you like old country string band music with a bluesy feel, you might be interested in this film. I liked the music, and I liked "Louie Bluie,"--not just his music and drawings--but his personality.

Very loose and casual. Any background information is provided by Armstrong and his cohorts in a series of shootin' the shit conversations. Zwigoff doesn't try to sell us on his importance to the world of blues (although the music is terrific), but he's just one of those great old characters whose charisma and rich well of experience makes for entertaining storytelling. For me the best moment was when he reveals his "Whorehouse Bible. The documentary isn't that revelatory, but it's a lot of fun.
