A longtime couple (Alfred Molina and John Lithgow) marry, and when Molina loses his job over it, they find themselves forced to live apart, and resolving the situation is anything but easy. Essentially an updating of MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW, like that film it boasts fine acting from its leads--Lithgow is deeply charming and Molina is subtly powerful--but unlike that film it often feels unfocused and has too many aimless subplots to be easily overlooked. It still manages to be quite touching.

Excellent performances from the two leads, but the plot is head-scratchingly unfocused and there seems to be no urgency to any of the issues at hand.

Sweet and slight, "Love is Strange" benefits from the likability of the Lithgow/Molina pair and the homely, simple approach but ultimately fails to become special or essential.

Well acted and with its heart in the right place, but neither story or direction is exceptional enough to be truly memorable. Did not like the ending, where the emotional weight of the story is suddenly transported to a minor, fairly uninteresting character.

Kind of a modern reworking of Leo McCarey's "Make Way for Tomorrow" in that it's about two aging lovers living in a world that doesn't make it easy for them to be together. Sachs' screenplay is full of keen observations about what it means to age and what it means to live with and apart from others, and the performances are warm and lived-in. A quite moving film.

Yes, the plot is a bit of a mess, but it doesn't matter too much. What matters is the relationship between the two main characters and how they weather the changes in their lives. It's subtle, reserved and genuinely touching, and both Molina and Lithgow are superb.

I liked its slow but flowing tempo which somehow creates a meditative experience as we witness the petite moments in their lives.

Superb acting by the two leads; Terrible acting by the supporting cast. A decent use of a rainy afternoon

This unacknowledged gay remake of the McCarey classic "Make Way for Tomorrow" communicates much of the original film's sweetness, little of its power, and none of its concentrated effect. Lithgow is particularly good in the Beulah Bondi role.

Awesome lead roles and capable directing, but the writing leaves a lot to hope for.

Very, very slow slice-of-life film about an old, artsy NY gay couple. Nothing much happens in this movie, you could say it's subtle, but even the emotional side of this film didn't connect with me. It's all about shots of clouds while Chopin is playing in the background.

Two actors that I usually quite enjoy, but the story was slow and plodded along without much excitement or action. I have no complaints about the acting, all of which was superb, but the story is so very dull, boring and haphazard. I really had to struggle to stay awake. The ending was shabbily handed. Good performances could not elevate this beyond being mostly a snooze fest. Such a waste of excellent talent. The director also lingered on several scenes far too long.

I felt this movie felt very French. A bit aimless and strange. Just wandering around life with little point.

Simple and "tender" (never used that word in a review before), and the leads are both excellent. But it ultimately left me kinda cold.

27 Gener 2016 - M'han semblat històries i personatges entranyables. En algun moment no entenia gaire bé què es pretenia explicar. La família aquella tenien unes maneres estranyes, interessants. Hi havia coses no previsibles als diàlegs, i al ritme també. El sol de l'última escena era maco.

This movie just errs about, not having much to say about any of the numerous subjects it touches upon. (Least of all about love.)

A quiet, slow drama where nothing much ever really happens. The setup was good, the ending left me wanting. Very little magic beyond the first act, but it was ok.

Lithgow and Molina are very convincing in their love for each other as Ben and George, and while the premise of the film is full of potential, the execution all feels a bit lacklustre and predictable. One of those films from which you walk away unsatisfied yet not resenting the viewing experience.

What happens to these characters is pretty terrible but the story is presented as a matter-of-fact slice of life. Several good performances and many sweet moments, also some low-stakes domestic conflict. One odd subplot involves the grandson, who may have fallen under the bad influence of a slightly older friend, gets in trouble for apparently stealing antique French books and hiding them under his bed (why?). The ending was very abrupt and unsatisfying.
