Italy in the 30s. Tonino, a sad faced, freckled peasant, comes to Rome to kill Mussolini. He has anarchist connections, and his contact in Rome is Salome, a lively flapper and popular professional at the bordello where she lives. She introduces him as her cousin, giving him access to the brothel, and she helps him prepare for the assassination, scheduled a few days after his arrival... (imdb)

A thing of wonder and joy and sadness [I don't know if I've ever felt this way about a movie, it's all-encompassing]. Such virtuoso filmmaking, there's not an edit that feels rushed, a frame that feels off. Giannini's character is so full of virtue, resolute in what he must do and the consequences of it; with marvelous supporting characters popping up in the usual Italian fashion. One of the finest scripts I've ever witnessed if all the rest wasn't enough. I just love everything here, clearly.

Somewhat complex exploration of political idealism, martyrdom and sacrifice, in relation to which the filmmaker knows better than most that, regardless of how many times history may or may not repeat itself, on each occasion it is likely to prove composed of equal parts tragedy and farce. Some great scenes and a strong conclusion.

A must for anyone interested with Lina Wertmuller or Giancarlo Giannini, who gives a surprisingly low-key, pathetic performance unlike his usual macho (even if also quite pathetic) roles.

Giannini has a sort of Bruno S. quality to him at times. Character-driven tale of assassination, which you don't see often enough.

An interesting plot that quickly gets mired in melodrama. Strong characters, but across the board unsympathetic, damaged and insultingly mercurial. Life under fascism sucks, if not because every narrative ends in tragedy. Bonus points for the smattering of philosophy, being a convincing period piece and the location romps through Rome.

A staunchly and ferociously political film which is brimming with warmth, humanity, humor and vivacity, which only makes the sting of its brutally cynical ending that much more painful. Wurtmuller's script is full of unlikely comic details which are nonetheless convincing because of the sincerity and passion with which her characters are drawn and ultimately realized.

A great film, and the more time passes since watching it the more I find myself liking it and wanting to see it again. It strikes this nice balance between comedy and tragedy, between beauty and grotesqueness, between happiness and sadness and though at times the characters can grate a tiny bit for the most part the film is highly amusing, thoroughly dramatically engaging and very affecting.

Well, this lives up to the title, by presenting a wonderfully crafted love story, helped by intelligent performances, that soon interjects and contrasts with the political rebellion. Wertmüller fills the entire film with amazingly entertaining dialogue, and performed by the likes of Giannini, really lift off the screen. The last 30 minutes had me laughing at how great it is -- maybe a tad slow at times, but this is a tremendous film about the transformative power of love.

Boomerangs between bawdy comedy (or grotesque caricature) and drama.
