I think this is the funniest Allen movie I've seen so far. Virutally every line spoken here is amusing at worst. I'm sure I'm missing out on some references to Russian literature and such (I'm actually reading Crime and Punishment right now), but the War & Peace and Seventh Seal references are fairly obvious. My favorite part was the repeated "morality is subjective, but subjectivity is objective, but ..." schtick. Also, "wheat".

It was weak. I was never interested. Although the part of the doctor was played with gusto and verve and the girl had a delightful cameo role. A puckish satire of contemporary mores. A droll spoof aimed more at the heart than the head.

Allen's most cerebral comedy, I've always had a soft spot for this one, and it's even funnier now that I get all the Bergman and Dostoyevsky references. A few gags fall flat, but there's an abundance of gut-busters.

This movie is guilty of rewarding the intellectual elitist a great deal with its homages to the works of Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Russian literature in general. It is truly the greatest of Allen's more wacky comedies.

The movie is pretty obvious. Very rarely an actor/actress surprises me more than a movie. This time Diane Keaton had me in the gut with her eerie and tempting manners. Seems more theatrical than most of Allen. Contains a mix of best elements in Allen comedy. Characters shapeshift dimensions constantly. The dialogue range goes from cheap musicals to satire on the meanings of life.

Truly an intellectual comedy. I don't think I ever burst out laughing but I was constantly giddy at all the little jokes and references Allen throws around, and I'm sure I missed many more. The dramatic side of the film is also pretty solid.

a large number of the jokes were either forced or unfunny, and those that were funny were nothing to write home about. allen and keaton both give performances that were not their best, and the faux-intellectual monologues/conversation (not that i didn't get them) do nothing to further the film's entertainment value. the story is well written, but the film simply lacks anything spectacular about it.

Extremely funny. Keaton is great. And who can ever forget Olga Georges-Picot (born in Shanghai in 1940, during the Japanese occupation, and who, two decades later, would commit suicide in Paris by jumping from her apartment building)?

I saw this right after "Take the Money and Run," and while it is a different kind of comedy, it is still just as funny. Chemistry between Allen and Keaton is great, lots of belly laughs, and if you like philosophy, you'll love the dialogue.

Familiarity with the works of Bergman, Dostoevsky, and Eisenstein, as well as some basic understanding of Russian history and culture are sort of a prerequisite if you're going to enjoy this film. I saw it when I was younger and barely cracked a smile because most of the references went right over my head. I recently gave it a second chance after taking a film class and I was laughing so hard I was dying. "Wheat." Hahaha. Wonderful film.

This Woody at his very best, both as a comedian and as a satirist -"Love and Death" is a biting, hilarious farce that is as sophisticated, brilliant and funny as any of his celebrated masterpieces that would follow. I have to admit however that I have a soft spot for this one -to me, this is the epitome of Woody's hysterical, and yet oh-so-poignant spiritual meditations, his humor is in top form and the allusions to Russian Literature are ingenious even if you don't get all the references.

A historical dramady that only Allen could conceive and bring to full life on the screen. It's no 'The Duellists' or one of Watkins' historical masterpieces, but having said that it's far better than many period films that are nothing but facade. Rating may increase on further viewings (I watched it quite a while ago now).

Woody Allen's neurotic Jewish accent and sexy bad hair perfectly stand out against the impressive and visually stunning 19th century Russia. This could've been a comedy classic for me, but I felt the slapstick wasn't up to snuff as it should've been. But the film mainly concerns itself with the wonderful dialogue and hilarious inspections on the two title subjects. This is a film to be quoted to death.

I've never read a 19th-century Russian novel but I imagine it is exactly like this. This could be Woody's funniest movie - rapidfire one-liners and excellent slapstick. Also, it is almost certainly Diane Keaton's best performance in a Woody Allen film. (two times)

Allen struck the right mix of slapstick and bookish comedy that he generally abandoned after the success of Annie Hall. In retrospect, it perhaps represents a lost pathway, a missed opportunity, but there are plenty of quotables, and Keaton was arguably in peak comic form.

The wacky slapstick-y bits weren't as off-putting as in something like Bananas, mainly because they were mixed with hilarious, intelligent, philosophical dialogue and Bergman references. I prefer Allen when he's more down-to-Earth, but this was still very good.

Most of the things it displays meaning to be cynic humor feels to me like a display of the shortcomings in life that can be easily evaded. Yes people are stupid and annoying sometimes, find better ones, not everyone is broken in the wrong way. I mean life is more than the cards you are dealt... you can forge your own life no matter how tricky it can get with those cards, overcome whatever is holding you back, even if not fully, make something of yourself that you like.

The best and last of the early Woody movies. Really abuses the pure comedy genre to get out a whole lot of really heavy philosophic, cinematic and literary concepts, references and debates in as bluntly as possible-- but done with all the skill and tact of someone trying really really hard to sleep with a liberal arts student. Satirizes the hell out of the intellectually posing for pussy set (a club Woody's admittedly a member of) in a language only they could understand. Hilarious as shit.

Merely referencing stuff is not funny to me, and I don't see how what Woody does in this film is any more sophisticated than the "jokes" in present-day spoofs. Also, were the big-word discussions an attempt to make his comedy cerebral or a piss-take on intellectualism? Not that I really care much.

Well this movie is n--WOODY ALLEN!!... I've never been a fan of Woody Allen, but this movie is making me hate him. He's never actually funny and the only thing he can play is WOODY ALLEN!!. That said he's not too terrible a writer/director, because the other characters are at times amusing and the parodies of Russian literature and culture are genuinely clever. Nevertheless, it's a terrible failure of a comedy.

Unlike his previous films, this is a fairly lush, proper looking film with great cinematography by Ghislain Cloquet. Writing entirely on his own, Allen grafts his Marx Brothers/Charlie Chaplin/Bob Hope sense of humour onto his love of philosophy, Russian literature and European art films. It's a strange mix, and it's absolutely hilarious ... easily his funniest straight comedy.

Despite a few cheap shots, like mentioning famous character names for no reason, Love and Death juxtaposes the supposed depth of classical Russian literature with the simpler more contemporary worldview brilliantly and with great ease. Devil, however, is in the detail and this movie is full of it, from two napoleons fighting in the background to well ridiculed monologues about when to love is to suffer. All this without ever losing that Russian spirit, just so slightly distorted.

It's remarkable how much of this film plays out with the same tone and rhythms of an average, critically disdained modern comedy. There's a similar commitment to laughs-at-all-costs. Flailing slapstick, broadly crude wordplay and anachronistic nonsense are deployed for jolts and jokes. Of course, Allen is spoofing Russian literature, drama and philosophy so the film has considerably more heft. It's as clearly a descendant of the grinning anarchy of the Marx Brothers as anything Allen ever did.
