A visually astonishing movie made up of 75 times the number of oil paintings that Van Gogh created in his lifetime. It's hard for me to decide if that's a remarkable accomplishment, or if it devalues one of art's most beloved painters, perhaps it's both. I don't have any partiality toward Van Gogh or his work, but I know an original idea for a movie when I see one.

So hard to place this one because visually it's a true triumph and possibly one of the most innovative films ever made. On the other hand the story is just so damn dry and didactic, Van Gogh's story could have been told with so much more power and anguish than is present through these dry conversations. Certainly worth watching but it could have been so much more.

This was just as beautiful as I was hoping it would be. It's a fairly short and simple story but it's made in a rare fashion that truly makes it a once-in-a-lifetime experience. All of the sound editing, painting, and framing are extremely detailed and pretty to watch. It's no wonder so many people were on board for this project. I personally loved the score and the ending song. It's most certainly worth a watch.

It's not every day that a new medium in art comes along. This film is poetic, mysterious, poignant, refreshing, and beautiful. It's not for everyone. It's not a fast movie. However, for art lovers, particularly anyone who has marveled at a Van Gogh painting in person, Loving Vincent should strike a chord.

Citizen Van Gogh. The film's technical achievements are undeniable, but once the story fell into place and started to move, the attempt to find Van Gogh's Rosebud never matched the visual opulence - a quality distance between story and sight that's always uncomfortably present. But the idea to show flashbacks as Undercoating was an inspired choice, allowing for needed subtext to the paint - hinting at a fullness of artistic achievement only in death.

Even a masterful story would have been overshadowed by each wonderfully painted frame of the film; as it were, it followed a neat conceit ably, but not exceptionally, executed. The strict visual realism of characters, as if traced from live footage, was a slight disappointment, but does not diminish the incredible feat of 65,000 oil-painted frames placed together in flowing animation.

"Hey, let's make the first fully painted animated feature film and base it on the life of none other than Vincent Van Gogh, but actually not make it about him!" As a great man once said, "what the fuck were they thinking?!"

As a technical achievement, it is notable for the perfect marrying of style and subject, with van Gogh’s distinctive brushstrokes and colour schemes effectively creating an abstract view of its world (are we are seeing what van Gogh sees?); on the other hand, its narrative terribly clunky and heavy-handed, with Booth’s Jessica Fletcher-like protagonist sleepily interrogating suspects in a fairly dull speculative murder investigation. Still worthy and memorable; may benefit from a rewatch.

My mouth actually dropped open for the first couple minutes. Although the pacing slows for a bit, the awe-inspiring visuals and unique mystery-driven exploration of Van Gogh conveys heart and vision.

Without the visual style then you have a fairly basic story. A lot of it is okay but hardly mind-blowing, good enough to keep you watching but not good enough to be memorable. However, it's not like you just separate a movie from its different aspects so it has to be taken into consideration and it does make the experience more beautiful. The only time the story itself got to me was at the end. Definitely see it for what it accomplished, even if the narrative lacks.

Worth seeing solely for the art. This wouldn't pass as a live action film with its slow moving story. The middle part in particular is very slow. It does pick up a bit towards the end though.

The gimmick is worth seeing. Its impressive, astounding. The cast does very well in this quiet little flick. I was fooled early on into thinking it might be much broader than just a look at Van Gogh...as a variety of people give just as varying impressions of the man there's nearly a theme in their various, and often conflicting perceptions of him that might have opened to a more general "who is anyone" idea...but the film narrows down to just van Gogh which is disappointing.

Doesn't resonate too much beyond the surface, but what surface! The visuals are utterly stunning and so intoxicating that they alone justify Loving Vincent as one of the best animated films of 2017 (admittedly, a fairly barren year for the medium, but oh well).

Astonishing visuals; you can't deny the love and care that went into animating this film, successfully achieving the sensation of living inside Van Gogh's work. If as much work went into the storytelling this could be an excellent film, but unfortunately it's kind of boring. Too bad. Worth seeing as a visual experience, though.

It's a wonderful thing, but the story is like something out of a Heavy Rain-mission. That is to say - boring, unntural and hard to get invested in. The beautiful art is what sells the film. Most stunning in its movements and transitions, truly inspired interpretations of filmic elements in paint form.

Very innovative animation (filmed on location, but then drawn over), and I would recommend to any Van Gogh fan, but wasn't really completely successful conveying what he was like.

Ok, beautiful, but ultimately dull and poorly narrated -- basically a collection of black and white (!) flashbacks through a dude investigating the artist's last days while the film shows itself as the ultimate homage to the painter by emulating his style. What a hack.

Visually breathtaking, if a bit grating on the eye. The plot reminded me of the S-Town podcast, in that we think we're getting a murder-mystery, but what we're actually getting is a portrait of a man, the people around him and how differently they all view each other.

The presentation of Loving Vincent is undoubtedly better than its story, but even visually it's not without its problems. The paint-rotoscoping often lands it in uncanny valley-territory, and the mix of flat scenes and moving "3D" scenes is rather jarring. The story is fairly simple but didn't leave me bored like it did some of the movie's harsher critics, and I liked how it showcases the small-minded world that this great artist lived in. I would recommend it for its unique ambition alone.

A devastating assault of style against substance. Sure, it immediately takes its place as one of rotoscope animation's most impressive feats, but the script (and soundtrack) is so dull and uninspired, I'm still loath to recommend this.

van Gogh changed the world, so the people picking up the pieces of his life can only do it within the world he created. That's all well and good, the visuals are astonishing and there are some really good scenes. The actual story, though, can't quite make up its mind about what it wants to say.

The dialogue is tiring, even the lusciously rotoscoped paint became visually tiring after a while. Even with that said, it is still an incredible feat of cinema, successfully bringing to life well-loved paintings.

Not exactly a bore, but certainly not the marvel it was advertised to be. The animation technique is well-publicised, even stating the facts once more at the beginning of the film. There is another, much more tasteful, film that used the same technique: Petrov's The Old Man and the Sea. Anyway, the painted animation can be cool, and the actors are good, but the story remains weak and clunky.

Pretty sure this is the most visually striking feature film I have ever seen. I could barely even focus on the story for the first 20 minutes, too busy wowing at the scenery. Plot-wise, it takes a page or two out of Citizen Kane. It doesn't come with any mind-boggling revelations or life lessons in the end, but it's pretty engaging. Perhaps a more abstract story would have suited better, but still. A decent story told with such unique and ambitious visuals is enough for a high grade from me.

Technically, this film is beautiful and the sheer achievement of animating over 8,000 separate paintings stands on its own. As a story, I felt that parts were a bit heavy-handed and slow, but the film does manage to capture a certain melancholy that shrouded the painter's mysterious life and death and that feeling stuck with me after watching.

4-5 kez izlenir. Vincent Van Gogh'un dünyasında yaşıyoruz. Filmin sonunda, kendi dünyasında yaşamak istemeyen şaheser. Burası yaşadığı ve öldüğü yer.
