This was the first time I've ever seen a film in the theater alone. I don't just mean that I went by myself, but that I was the only person in the theater. Given this condition I'm sure the movie could have just been 90 minutes of Harry Dean Stanton killing cigarettes and I would have loved it. It turned out to be a rumination on death, truth, and of course, being alone - "all one" says Lucky. If you have any fondness for the late actor it should resonate. The smile he leaves us with is perfect.

If you like Harry Dean Stanton this is a great movie. If you dislike Harry Dean Stanton we can't be friends. Some of the details in the writing could feel contrived if they didn't feel so true to the central (non)performance. Most of them ARE true actually and this kinda functions as a poignant autobiography of sorts. A humble and heartbreaking tribute to "the greatest character actor of all time" and his cranky yet uplifting life philosophy at the brink of the end. Realism is a thing.

David Lynch has a monologue about a tortoise that will knock your socks off. Lucky is a great vehicle for Harry Dean Stanton, and the entire cast is packed with excellent character actors, fitting from a director who's a legendary character actor himself. Great acting and character work and a script with just enough strong moments

A quaint little film with almost no drama to speak of, just an old man (played wonderfully by Stanton) going about his rounds, basically. But there's something a little profound about his conversations and his thoughts. Even though he's so great as Lucky and his death adds another level of oomph to it, I have to admit that Howard (David Lynch) and his views on his tortoise really hit me.

Seeing Harry Dean Stanton is like seeing an old friend, or feeding a baby tortoise. Much like most things, the old friend becomes a memory.

This feels like watching the end of an era of Americana. Impermanence, Harry Dean Stanton, transience, and David Lynch's pet tortoise.

Lucky isn't the best movie you'll see, but if you were a fan of Harry Dean Stanton it is an absolute must-see. It's a good movie that's more poignant and powerful due to its release following his death.

A terrific swan-song for Harry Dean Stanton, whose Lucky character is as entertaining to watch as the supporting characters. This film manages to be amusing and lightly philosophical without pretension or cliche, it's an endearing delight without avoiding dark subject matter.

"Realism is a thing". A remark made by the titular character - seamlessly portrayed by Harry Dean Stanton in his crowning swan song - that perfectly fits this movie. "Lucky" feels so naturally informed by life that you tend to forget how well-written it is. Its resonance is so grounded that even its comparatively bigger, more moving moments are unadorned and "small". Crucially, Lucky's character arc - his spiritual journey - is grand without being too complex. Or rather exactly because of that.

I liked the titular character, a somewhat curmudgeonly old man who isn't keen on other peoples attitudes and who is stubborn but yet is still, beneath it all, a decent guy, just trying to get by. Of course the fact that his name is Lucky is a bit ironic given not everything has gone his way. I suppose he's a bit of an underdog type character, which its often said Americans love. The film itself is quite understated but I enjoyed it regardless.

(spoilers) It's a semi-biographical story/tribute to a 90 year-old curmudgeon (Harry Dean Stanton) who lives by himself in a small desert town in southern Arizona. In the film, he has a flashback to a terrible experience as a child of being in a dark void. At the end of the movie, in a bar, he's talking about his atheism to the patrons and describes what he thinks comes after this life by referring them to that dark void. One of them asks, "what are we supposed to do with that?" He says, "smile

Absolutely charming swan song from Stanton, with a delicious supporting role from Lynch.

Thematically it resonates very strongly with its lead, of course. But the dialogue is awful (apart from when Harry is very obviously coming up with it himself, eg the war stories) and the characters are annoying clichés. The scenes in the bar are so awkward they’re almost unwatchable. I can kinda see what Carroll Lynch was going for there (convivial matron holding court), but he landed very far short

Nice, quirky, old man movie. Small town, nothing happens. David Lynch pops up. A bit of philosophical rumination and cigarette smoking. Strangely, I've had worse cinematic experiences. There must be some intangible life force in the fibres of this film.

Not only is this an excellent film with a great ensemble cast, Harry Dean Stanton gives an incredible performance (right near the end of his own life).

in his first lead role since PARIS TEXAS, and his last, HDS plays a version of himself in a pastiche of his filmography, living his daily life PATERSON-style, shooting the shit while coming to terms with his impending mortality. he gets trapped by the clichéd, mawkish screenplay at times (the bar scenes suck), but he's a uniquely compelling presence to the last, not least when calling DEAL OR NO DEAL 'a convoluted piece of shit' - maybe the truest, most righteous sentiment in cinema last year.

An old man realizes he is old and has to figure out what that means to him. Harry Dean Stanton is fantastic as the grumpy, old guy and his interactions with his surrounding are sometimes absurd, sometimes very human, but always realistic and somewhat wise.

Feels a little bit forced sometimes, especially when it comes to the humor, but most of time it works. Stanton and Lynch are pretty cool and while the movie is kind of a stringing together of moments of reflection for Lucky, which is a bit repetitive, the moments themselves are quite powerful.

This contemplation of life, spirituality and mortality offers a funny, absurd, and very fitting conclusion to Harry Dean Stanton's long and storied career.

The plot and dialog is slow and plodding. There was no action and very little excitement. A few humorous moments were not enough to balance the mundane. So many missed opportunities to do something more than follow an old man around a small desert town.

not my taste. But did capture a good example of reaction of veterans from WWII. Also created a sense of dread about what might happen next. Lucky is a nice man but you don't know what he is going to do next.

A few have said this felt forced. I didn't perceive that at all. Stanton is a frail 90 year old man. Based on what little I know about him, this is an autobiographical film. He has always played himself to a large degree, and that's what's made him great. He brings his own captivating and unique charisma. Lucky is no exception. If you're looking for a plot, look elsewhere. This is a story about finding peace in letting go of what you can't control and the fear and isolation that accompany it.
