Lumière et compagnie

Lumière et compagnie

1995
Documentary
1h 28m
40 international directors were asked to make a short film using the original Cinematographe invented by the Lumière Brothers, working under conditions similar to those of 1895. There were three rules: (1) The film could be no longer than 52 seconds, (2) no synchronized sound was permitted, and (3) no more than three takes. The results run the gamut from Zhang Yimou's convention-thwarting joke to David Lynch's bizarre miniature epic. (imdb)

If David Lynch was born a hundred years earlier we would probably get the exact same movies. Mulholland Drive with Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. That part in Blue Velvet when Robert Mitchum huffs gas screaming into Garland’s crotch. I don’t give a shit about the math on this.

This is for Lynch's segment. Not a whole lot to grab hold of, but it was vaguely creepy. A full length silent horror film by Lynch would be freaking awesome.

Akdeniz film festivalinin ilk filmi. Bu kadar sevdiğim yönetmen varken Lumiere saygısı altında 100kez aynı şeyi izlemek yoruyor. Bari film anlam olarak bir şey katsa o da yok.

If you ever want to see an anthology where one segment completely blows the others out of the water... Lynch's short would get a score of 85 and single-handedly pulls this up by about 10 points.

Exactly what it says on the tin. If the concept excites you and you're familiar with most of the filmmakers here, this might be an interesting watch.

Haven't seen them all for a long time, but there was both okay and less successful ones. David Lynch's story was amazing to see how it was done and what was the result. Spike Lee's slogan lives life of it's own with my wife, "Say da-da".

It's a pity that not all the directors are listed here. Very mixed results. The best were those of David Lynch and Andrei Konchalovsky, and a number of others were also good.

Great idea, unfortunately not every director made something out of it.

Boring but it was a good game to analyze the characteristics of the directors. You can see which of them are excited for this game, which are sloppy or which are getting boring because they can't stop being themselves. If you haven't seen enough of most of them, don't waste your time. this is junk food for cinema junkies. And there is a secret "as bayrakları as as as" moment.

Fascinating documentary on film making, it's past and it's future, featuring the usual suspects of world renowned directors. Kiarostami's film is perhaps the best.
