At the Berlin Conference of 1885, Europe divided up the African continent. The Congo became the personal property of King Leopold II of Belgium. On June 30, 1960, a young self-taught nationalist, Patrice Lumumba, became, at age 36, the first head of government of the new independent state. He would last two months in office. (Zeitgeist Films)

It's melodramatic and inconsistent, but because of its subject matter I'm willing to give it a free pass. Patrice Lumumba is a hero of African independence and apart from Peck's other Lumumba film, I can't recall any other movie that tells his story. Great if you want a dramatic reenactment of a significant piece of African history, not worth it if you don't.

Excellent historical film. It feels touched with melancholy for a generation's dreams of decolonization. I recommend watching it along with Raoul Peck's 1990 fascinating self-reflexive documentary about the impossibilities and archival silences of making a film about Lumumba.
