L'une chante, l'autre pas

France during the 70s was wild. There was a lot in here that felt like it was from an entirely different world. This was a nice meditation on friendship and reproductive rights. It's nice to have a film without any huge conflict, other than, y'know, the right to have an abortion.

Too much dated hippie bullshit.

Pregnancy, birth and abortion in France, 1962–76. The first half is strong, with unusual storytelling via photographs, letters, postcards and songs, but the second half becomes too much like a celebratory parade of female pride, going nowhere. Kael’s pulverising review, “Scrambled Eggs”, is too harsh – the characters aren’t as “skin-deep” as she says and it isn’t as much of a “cheery, educational feminism-can-be-fun movie” as she suggests – but she successfully identifies the film's problems.

Exquisitely photographed and edited, but also filled with a bunch of truly awful, embarrassingly bad folk music and trite hippie bullshit cowering from criticism behind a weak appeal to feminism.
