Two actresses, Béatrice Dalle and Charlotte Gainsbourg, are on a film set telling stories about witches - but that's not all. 'Lux Æterna' is also an essay on cinema, the love of film, and on-set hysterics.

Noé's response to #metoo, perhaps, about cinema as a stage on which and behind which women are sacrificed, asking how this fact, which is not exactly condemned, relates to the artistic imperative. Interesting that the moment of (torturing) genius comes not from the (female) director but from the DP. On hiring Dalle as director: well what else did the producer expect? Should be seen in a darkened room at loud volume and without interruptions. In short: best Saint Laurent commercial ever.

A Noé movie is always an experience, no description can fully indicate what it is. The plot shows the process of shooting a movie: the conflicts between director, producers and photographer; lost actors; personal problems and still a need to push for some artistic result; a young ambitious director that intends to use his work to talk about relevant topics. All of this builds up a chaotic environment that ends in the brilliant scene of the rehearsal. A portrayal of shooting a movie as torture.

I really found this compelling and absorbing, even if it made for uncomfortable viewing at times. It also felt a bit "unfinished", but I guess that worked in the context of the limited story. I liked the snippets of quotes from interesting directors, and those fed into understanding the on-set dynamics. Ambitious and enjoyable, if a bit brief and rough in parts.

Another interesting Noé provocation represents a further step in his war against epileptics (seriously, stay away if you are prone to the condition). Noé's style makes it difficult to parse what he is attempting to say, especially on an initial viewing – and his harsh, somewhat ugly style makes his film's difficult to embrace. On the specifics of this effort - Gainsbourg and Dalle are compelling presences and the film lingers in the memory, but not sure to what purpose this is designed.

Gaspar Noe'nin intikam filmi. Yönetmenlerin, ilgi çekici sözlerini kullanıp, Orta Çağ'da kadınların cadı olarak yakıldığı işkenceyi anlatmak istemiş. Fakat, Gaspar Noe, bildiğin oyunculardan, set ekibinden, sanat eleştirmeninden, makyözünden, asistanından ve özellikle de figuranlardan intikamını güzelce alıp, işkencesini seyirciye anlatıyor. Filmin sonu, zaten afişte. Sanat filmi mi istiyorsun? Al sana sanat filmi. Arthouse. İstediğin kadar izle.

"an essay on cinema, the love of film, and on-set hysterics" with an epilepsy-inducing ending (standard for Noe ;))

post-Climax Gaspar Noé is at his most potent here. Too bad it isn't 40 more minutes of story.

“Lux Æterna” is a visually stunning sensory experience that is well worth watching for its technical elements and the chaos of its second and third acts. While the message may be a bit ambiguous and the character of “Béatrice” may not be entirely successful, the film is still an impressive achievement from Gaspar Noé.
