This was Pixar's first attempt at animation, at which they succeeded with flying colors. It's just a little short animation, but like everything else Pixar has done since, it focuses on telling a story - in this instance, about a kid-lamp, called Luxo Jr., and it's father. (imdb)

Though not much happens, it's an endearing and funny little short that shows the promise of what Pixar was to become.

Sure, it's cute and all, but it's very much a tech demo and not all that enjoyable. Worth watching because it's short and has historical value, that's about it.

The shortie behind Pixar's introduction and success. Looks amazing especially considering the date.

Who knew lamps could act? Pixar flexes their animation muscles in 1986 with this iconic character (part of their logo) who happens to be a desk lamp. The little lamp Luxo Jr., jumps on top of a ball and flattens it, you can see the disappointed from the senior Luxo and the shame of the little Luxo. For this being a short film...

It's amazing how far Pixar came along in the two years between The Adventures of André and Wally B (1984) and this. Charming and cute, with excellent sound design and a nice jazzy score. Tells a cute story about a parent-child relationship through lamps. The lamps are animated well, and it's very impressive how much life and emotion you can read from a moving lamp. Very well done.

So good. I knew this was Pixar's first, but I didn't realize this was from 1986. Crazy! It holds up. It demonstrates why Pixar has been so successful--simple story with beautiful animation. Hell, there's even pretty good characterization

Simple story, but the personalities of these two lamps are evident in their mere motions.

Some kind of landmark in the history of employing computers to create animated images, but other than that, nothing special.

Luxo Jr. is deceivingly simple, but in 1986, this was the start of the revolution of computer animation and the birth of Pixar's lovely mascot.

It's cute enough and the animation is great, but it's relatively simple. It feels too much like an early attempt where they are just focusing more on animation than anything else for me to give it a higher score. Still not a bad little short.

Pixar's original short (and it is short - 2 mins) won't blow away the kids of today but in terms of animation this is seminal. So smooth and clear, and it was made in 1986! That's the same year the NES was released for God's sake!
