All the particulars seem to be in place: it has great acting, the aesthetic is transportive, it's well paced, it's made with intensity and a deep respect for the source material, it's brutal and effectively tragic. Yet, I'm not convinced Kurzel has anything new or worthwhile to say in this adaptation. Lots of sound and fury yet no soul. The color palettes contribute to the soullessness; really drab, lots of orange and blue, clean to the point of being anti-septic, etc.

Trades in narrative depth for cold, emotionally distant moodiness and an almost paralyzing sense of unavoidable doom, aided by some amazing cinematography and music. This was just Extremely My Shit. Sean Harris and Fassbender are intimidating as hell in this. It probably helps to know the play beforehand.

More I reflect, the more I appreciate Macbeth. Being no scholar of Shakespeare, I did have my struggles with the dialogue. Still hardly difficult to follow story wise and made much easier by the two most talented acting people in the industry today (Fassbender + Cotillard). Unreasonably beautiful to to look at to the point where you now you are seeing something special. Days later and I still haven't managed to shake images of a manic Fassbender from my head.

A harrowing, bleak and bloody telling of one of the Bard's best tales. The meticulous attention paid to the visual composition of every shot is immediately and stunningly apparent. Fassbender and Cotillard are superb in the lead roles, as is Paddy Considine as Banquo, but special mention must be made of Sean Harris' volcanic MacDuff. He was absolutely terrifying. My only complaint is the excision of one of my favorite lines from the banquet scene: "Never shake thy gory locks at me!"

I must've aged a few weeks watching this dreadful, dire, dry, drole, deadpan adaptation of what is supposed to be a pretty kick-ass story. There's just one emotion expressed throughout this whole film: overly-serious. The dialogue is pretty poor as well, just general old-fashioned prose, but most of it is inaudible anyway. Even the cinematography, sometimes impressive, is as one-coloured and one-note as the mood of the film. A real yawn-fest, and the action scenes suck as well.

Stylish, efficient telling of The Scottish Play. Some beautiful use of the Scottish and English countryside, and some excellent, clever visual techniques come into play. The narrative departures are fine, although I would have preferred a bit more witch action. The leads and the supporting cast are good; also, the accents are largely real or realistic. I haven't seen any of the other "classic" versions of Macbeth (forshame) so I don't know how this compares. I preferred Throne of Blood, though.

Gorgeous, with some brilliant visual storytelling ideas, making some good decisions in what to keep and what to cut. But Jesus Christ, it ain't half broody. How about just ONE natural line delivery in two hours, hmmm?

Despite being preceded by both Welles and Polanski, Kurzel has managed to make the best screen adaption of The Scottish Play I've ever seen. Hauntingly beautiful imagery, honest performances, fantastically scored and with new subtexts added quite brilliantly and seamlessly to the story, this textbook How-to-fucking-do-it Shakespeare.

it's been criticised as too overdetermined, bloody, sexual, fatalistic, but the play is ALL blood, sex and inexorable time, as elemental as any work of literature ever penned. it's been criticised for emphasising image over word, but this is a work of audiovisual interpretation that's only limited by the trappings of theater and prestige cinema, and would benefit from being entranced still more deeply by the primordial forces shakespeare's words evoked and instinctively understood.

Excellent cinematography, direction, acting and a consistent tone throughout the film makes this film one of the best Shakesperean adaptations to film. Fassbender's performance is beyond belief as we watch his character descend further and further into madness in five acts.

Another cold and gloomy adaptation of Macbeth. I put this on after watching the bare bones version Joel Coen just put out and almost had a stroke when it opened with some Bravehart style battle.

Read the review while listening this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0rAnyWUnwE I love Macbeth! He is the embodiment of the eternal fight between will and destiny. He obtains full control over his will in time, but at the expense of his mental sanity and by going into depths of the evil. His will and independence even surpasses his wife and the pure will means a death drive, because it constantly needs obstacles to overcome and death is the ultimate obstacle. Great cinematography too.

Made for those who already know the story of Macbeth. Heavily relies on gorgeous, brooding visuals with less attention to story clarity, all the way to making certain dialogue unintelligible.

A sparse yet beautifully shot version of Macbeth. Seriously, who knew Scotland could be so beautiful. And the camera work was magnificent. Unfortunately this was plagued with inaudible dialogue much of the time and the sparseness was a bit too much at times. Could be been great but what we got was okay at best.

Adam Arkapaw cinematography is absolutely stunning. It also perfectly captures the mental state of Macbeth and his wife. Fassbender at times is at his best in portraying the maddening king. But the pacing and editing seemed off. Shots are held shorter than they should be. And although the gloomy mood fits the subject, it's used constant. Thereby giving every scene the same gravitas and no time to breath. Like always, I had trouble understanding Shakespeare's texts, diminishing my enjoyment.

Goes nowhere, really. Starts off as brutal and gritty and stays like this until the end. But it feels really forced and Kurzel didn't know how to direct his actors. Fassbender and Cotillard both seemed overchallenged with the original Shakespeare dialogues because of this and furthermore insecure.

While its prose seems a bit obtuse, this is quite a fever of a film, full of beautiful images that suck actors' life as they speak of power, angst and despair. There is simply no intend to make it into a Game of Thrones-like epic actioner -- despite the amount of beatiful warfare imagery in slowmo --, but to filter Shakespeare's tragedy into a narrative that has no interest in a plain storytelling, but in the power of monologues followed by hellish, hallucinatory shots.

Shot in the Scottish Highlands in thunder, lightning and rain by Adam Arkapaw, this Macbeth deserves to stand with the fiercest film versions of the play, directed by Orson Welles and Roman Polanski. Kurzel, blowing away all traces of academic respectability, leaves you chilled to the bone and ready to run for your life.

Cotillard and Fassbender give it their all in a lavish production. But I gotta say: I was, for some reason or other, neither invested in the drama nor particularly compelled by the Shakespearean language (as, for example, in 'Coriolanus' from 2011). I wonder why...

Justin Kurzel's Macbeth (2015) represents the bland artistry of modern movie making crossing paths with classic writings, creating a singular mood with it's floating imagery and no life into the immortal words of William Shakespeare. Beautiful montages, but moot. Serious and afraid to have it's characters stand out. Doesn't matter the passion the actors express to become Shakespearian, the whole thing is Kurzel's world which only serves as parallel poetry to Shakespeare without blending.

Let down by too strict adherence to the bleak, whispering tone of the film, none of the performances really shine and a number of iconic monologues come and go without anything to remember. Stunning visuals, though: bold and stylish.

Combine my favourite Shakespeare play with two actors I really admire playing the leads, and I'm sold. Fassbender was especially brilliant, as I expected. This is a pretty nice film, visually speaking, and I liked some of the interpretations of the text. It's hard to compare this with other Macbeth adaptations I've seen, as they've been from amazing directors like Welles and Polanski. But it was good to see a bit more modern take on the story, while keeping the original setting intact.

An at once slow and underwhelming dramatization of Shakespeare's tragedy - it's as if the film reached its dazzling apex within the opening sequence, only to coast on cruise control from that point on. Being an unadulterated Shakespeare adaptation, most of the text also flew completely over my head. I found myself marvelling, however, at the wonderful cast and visual prowess on display, both of which provided the film with some much needed ballast.

Macbeth is a difficult play to begin with; much of the verse is very obscure, and this adaptation's decision to have it read in Scottish dialect makes most of it totally incomprehensible. Beyond this one could mention the miscasting of Marion Cotillard, and the overbearing sound design. Fassbender gives us a sort of mopey, emo-ish Macbeth.

Kurzel directs the hell out of this, filling it with dark, bleak-looking scenery and mournful violins on the soundtrack. Fassbender and especially Cotillard bring their "A" games. The subject matter certainly can't be faulted. However, if you aren't familiar with the play, you'll kinda be lost. I don't know if this got chopped up in the editing room, but something's missing. It lacks the necessary emotional heft. Awfully good-looking, though.

An excellently picked cast totally batter through the play with urgency and despair, The wee changes were a nice update/rendition and helped tie the film together. Fassbender obvious highlight but he's totally overshadowed by Cotillard here. Fantastic imagery too, brutal without being gratuitous. And the landscapes!

I didn't enjoy Macbeth. Perhaps it was PTSD from school or it may have been way in which this adaptation was handled. The cinematography and music complement each other well, creating an atmosphere that is both bleak and intense. Unfortunately, the iconic dialogue from the play is taken verbatim, with all the excessive soliloquies included. While this works on a stage, here it detracts from the cinematic resulting in something more akin to a GIF. For me, the film was too artsy and tedious.

Quite good, but could have been much better if: A) They stuck with the Shakespearean dialog, but used appropriate inflection and annunciation. Or B) They modernized the script, and spoke as naturally as they did in this film. The mixture of the two was off-putting and often difficult to decipher.

Even after studying Shakespeare multiple times I still struggle with his dialogue. And of course, during a film, you don't have footnotes you can glance at to work out what they are saying. So for me, I watched this film on a purely visceral level. My brain was rarely engaged, I just let the film's visuals and music just wash over me.

Eccentric stagings of Shakespeare run the risk of it feeling like the story is happening in a miscellaneous series of disconnected locations, and this version suffers from that occasionally. Macbeth seems to live in some sort of cathedral, and the climactic battle seems to just happen abruptly in some exterior disconnected from his home. It's an interesting adaptation with a lot to offer.
