Made in America

This movie wanted so badly to have some kind of positive racial message, but the execution is simply horrific. The way humor is used here is pretty insulting. It reeks of the 80s even though it's a few years removed from the decade and there's little actual discussion about why race relations are so tense. Maybe it was assumed that people would just understand at the time it was released, but mostly it just makes Whoopi look "aggressively angry." A little too white-saviory too.

There is no way Ted Danson Whoopi Goldberg = Nia Long.

So awful, so why do I watch it everytime it is on the T.V?

Poor.

Benjamin directs with an evenly heavy hand on the comedy, the sentiment, and the gear-grinding shifts between. One sweet (and discreet) touch: a theater marquee in the background of a shot spells out a tribute to his wife: "Paula Prentiss Retrospective." (We might rather be watching that.) And his look-alike son, Ross, is given a tiny role on the television-commercial crew.

Lame vehicle for Goldberg and Danson. Predictable, lame and fairly unfunny.
