Cute romp about generations of abused women. At first it's all Big Momma's House and then Maya Angelou pops out and everything gets all "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" on you. Production values are lackluster but this has more heart and more to say than either Murphy or Lawrence's offerings in the uh...fatsuit genre.

Pretty good movie about family and the troubles we face. It is IMO a positive portrayal of black society as opposed to most other crap you see on film that focuses on gangs and slinging the rock.

The story isn't as awful as the reputation would lead you to believe - it's a nice tale about overcoming abuse and learning to love and respect yourself - but the fact that Tyler Perry needs to dress up as Madea to further the "sassy black grandma" stereotype is always concerning. Nice to see some of the elders (including Maya Angelou, what?!) with reflections on society, but the repeated message of violent discipline combined with God's love is a cliche that can only go so far.

It gets very preachy toward the end. The evil mother isn't very believable. The wife-beating angle is kinda lame because I just wouldn't think a woman would be that stupid to stay with that guy. Madea is cool, and Uncle Joe (?) is funny.

Incredibly creepy, in so many ways. I don't particularly want to think about it enough to enumerate them. Other than the fact that Maya Angelou is in it, which is fucked up! Or maybe not. I don't know. My sister loves it, which I also find a bit creepy. That's why I watched it. I'd sorta rather I had not.

The first Perry film with glimmers of real potential. Maybe he should ditch romance and Madea (I loved you in the plays, but in movies? not so much) and stick with family dramas.

Tyler Perry needs to just stop.

The characterizations of the aunt and the uncle by Perry are funny, with some nice one-liners. It reminded me a little of Eddie Murphy playing family members in The Nutty Professor. If you don't mind the fairy-tale-ishness, it can be quite entertaining.

A farrago of trite codswallop. Narratively obtuse with tectonic tonal shifts and misplaced earnestness serving as filler for a variety show of unfunny drag sketches and two parallel romantic plots, one unconvincingly sweet, the other unconvincingly horrific. I liked the fourth-wall breaking sketch over the credits better than any single part of the film.

""Trapped in the closet" fittingly describes Tyler Perry's lurid melodrama, in which characters repeatedly stumble onto others' dark secrets during living room chats." - Paul Schrodt

Frankly, the introduction to the series of Madea's movies could be done better-there's absolutely no background story about her at the beginning. This part is definitely more drama than a comedy, which is a good thing. From the drama I liked the confession scene, although the mother's behaviour doesn't seem probable (maybe thanks to acting skills of the actress). From the comedy, fairytale-like decorated church was the most lovely.Shame the ending was hastened too much, too sweet and highly unlikely.
