I didn't really get behind it until the revealing moments. While it does try and present a dark atmosphere, the way it all presented shows why writer Charles Bennett only directed two pictures in his life. The understanding of how to shoot the story effectively wasn't there. He should praise himself lucky he had Margaret Lockwood as the centerpiece of Madness of the Heart (1949).

Hopelessly overwrought melodrama is laughably bad in every respect - performances (especially Lockwood) are outrageously over-the-top, overselling an absurd storyline which probably would have worked better played completely straight.
