Another silly Abrahams movie that doesn't get close to matching the one that spawned them all. Bridges is the highlight.

Abrahams was always less effective without the Zuckers, but Mafia represented a considerable decline from even the Hot Shots films which were certainly good but no Airplane. It is an obvious spoof of Coppola and Scorsese's famous crime films, and there are some laughs to be had, especially from Bridges' take on Brando's classic role, but the creative team seems more interested in mocking the genre rather than deconstructing it, so the spectrum of humour remains limited. A missed opportunity.

Suffice to say that if you have a penchant for the childish humour of Jim Abrahams and Lloyd Bridges (or Leslie Nielsen), this film will tick the right boxes. Plenty of send-ups of Godfather-genre movies and other assorted 90s movies, mixed with daft nonsense and slapstick. It's one of the better comedies of its ilk; just don't expect any depth or maturity.

A bunch of stupidity with only a dash actual funny things is the recipe for this movie.

Abrahams tries too hard to make this Godfather-meets-Casino work -- some scenes are good, others totally suck --, but his failures are there to be noticed since the beginning: without the Zucker brothers on his side, he has problems with the storytelling and most of the gags are unoriginal -- they just make fun of other films, and that's it. Bridges, doing his last film with the ZAZ team -- or at least with just the A team --, shines.

A dumb time to be had by all.

Now this, this was funny. Clever, incessant, silly, & loaded with sight gags. Has the advantage of being a paradox so if you've seen a gaggle of mob movies the gags play even better. Love the literary title.

The worst spoof I have ever seen. And *that* is, in itself, obviously saying a whole lot.

The laugh-a-minute formula has a return rate of about 85% which really makes this a bit of an overlooked gem. Though to be fair, the "throw everything topical in"-style of writing did kind of originate here more than the Hot Shots movies, so I can understand if some people just chose to ignore it. But i just can't hate a movie that realizes that a boys greatest wish is some tig O'bitties.

Considering how easy it is to work with spoofing mafia films, it is staggering to see a failure of this caliber. There were maybe one or two actually funny gags, but the rest just relies too heavily on that awful, awful formula where random = automatic funny.

When I was younger this movie had so many jokes that went over my head but as an adult I understood them and understood that they went for the lowest hanging fruit.

I am a fan of slapstick, and I did laugh, but overall it was pretty dumb

Seen: 2. I'm not sure why I saw this twice, but I definitely saw it before I saw The Godfather. So I'm guessing I missed two whole levels of jokes. So maybe this one is better than I think.
