A light-hearted if somewhat unremarkable romp through a Sicilian crime family, led by a very charming Alberto Sordi as Antonio. It has its share of great moments, but it's kind of meandering and pointless. All of the characters outside of Antonio are flat and not acted terribly well, and the ending, despite being a pretty cool sequence, is practically devoid of resolution.

A Northern-ized factory supervisor returns to his Sicilian home... and finds himself indebted to the local mob. I can't think of anything bad to say about this movie, everything about it was done well enough. But I just didn't get into it that much. The main character didn't resonate with me, neither did the comedy. I enjoyed some of the smaller moments of Sicilian life, and the noir-ish climax was somewhat compelling. Most of it just kind of washed over me, though. Not bad, just unremarkable.

DVDRip Gopo.

An enticing setup with an overload of insensitive depiction of Sicilian life.

An amusing and heart-wrenching story of a man of exceedingly innocent character, and how he is damned to become guilty. Simple and deeply profound, with not a dull moment. Doe-eyed Alberto Sordi's capacity for both funny and sad is absolutely unparalleled.

Mafioso has an easygoing, lightly comedic tone for the most part, but this is shattered at its conclusion when loving family man Antonio is thrust into a horrific situation to repay the local don's kindness. Lattuada scarcely alludes to this coming finale and barely gives the audience a moment to breathe during this sequence, and such a magnificent manipulation is made all the more compelling by Sordi's phenomenal range as an actor.
