Essentially a post-financial-crisis account, comparable to Andrew Dominik's KILLING THEM SOFTLY (also 2012) and several other Soderbergh movies, of the travails of the small businessman in difficult economic times. The romantic subplot more conventionally insists that the perpetual party must come to an end (but perhaps this too is intended as commentary, in this case on the unsustainability of the speculative ecstasies of financialised, consumerist capitalism). The cast does very well.

There's a propulsive excitement to the actual stripping scenes, and Tatum is excellent. The movie's initially very high energy level slowly deflates over its runtime, though, eventually giving way to a drug subplot that feels airlifted in from some bad musician biopic. (Also, for a movie about male stripping, there really isn't that much R-rated man-flesh on display. Any given episode of Spartacus has more.)

Needed more dick, sex and fucking. Too innocuous to be interesting, too well-choreographed and omg-Tatum-is-dreamy to be a complete waste of time. Now someone please tell me: Where do I get my fucking Channing Tatum custom-made chairs?

I'm a good husband and I got this movie so that my wife can see McConaughey naked. But I enjoyed it quite a lot to be honest. It is full of energy, Tatum gave 110% as a dancer and Soderbergh's style somehow meshed very well with the strip club environment.

Contrary to what the trailers would have you believe, this film is more than just guys flaunting their bare asses, and I especially appreciated the nuances that are found in the excellently fleshed out characters. The shifting focus in characters and cliché-laden subplot keep it from reaching greater heights but the film boasts a throbbing energy and as much shit as I've given him in the past, Tatum is very watchable.

Really dug this as a shaggy, likeable hangout movie with naturalistic performances and great cast chemistry (apart from McConaughey's usual scenery-chewing bullshit, which I've ranted about before). So the mandated conflict straight out of Screenwriting 101 felt grafted-on and unwelcome. But Soderbergh directs the everloving fuck out of it, so it kept me invested throughout. The stripping scenes are truly bizarre, like some kind of surrealist art installation. People actually do this?

I have a hard time justifying being a heterosexual male and enjoying a movie about male strippers, but it happened. A harder time still explaining how about a half dozen different middle aged women actually talked me into watching it and feel downright ashamed for following through, but damn it "Magic Mike" was decent. Excuse me while I flagellate myself and put on this hairshirt.

I love watching beefcake just as much as the next male homosexual, and the choreographed scenes in this movie about male strippers provide some pleasure, and even depict some joy on the faces of both performers and audience. However, since it's a Hollywood movie, we can't allow that body-joy to last. Hence, the revenge reel, which always bores me.

Looking past the hype, positive AND negative, MAGIC MIKE proves a highly entertaining and perceptive look at a subculture few films have examined with depth or success. Reid Carolin's script is quite solid--and funny--but Steven Soderbergh pulls off a triple triumph as director, cinematographer, and editor, crafting a stylish film with the help of a committed cast: Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer are both completely convincing; Matthew McConaughey has a blast as the hubristic club manager.

Listened to a Slate Money podcast episode so I remembered I watched this. 1st film is more about post-recession gig economy; 2nd film is more about male strippers. Too bad everyone only thinks about the male stripper aspect of the movie when this is brought up. Good Soderbergh film. Will rewatch later.

Oddly fits well into Soderbergh's oeuvre, despite the flashy male stripper aspect obviously capturing the most attention. It features a nice ensemble class, including the struggling businessman-at-heart (Tatum) and the young lost soul being seduced by a more exciting lifestyle, along with frenetic, well-shot direction.

Soderbergh hasn't done anything worthwile for a decade, and this one doesn't repair that. Decent premise but not much of a story, and most magic is delivered by the casting - in Cody.H they managed to find an actress with even less facial expressions than the two male leads are capable of. *Preview*: #13#, exp-3*, popcorn, hype, story, reviews, (director Soderbergh/1), (cast), R2.

Okay, so, I'm clearly not the target audience for this thing (though I appreciated the flash of Olivia Munn it threw us right at the beginning!), but it struck me as mostly just dull. The whole "leave this life of glitz and glamor before it corrupts you!" storyline is one of the oldest in the history of cinema, and it seems like the cast just spends a lot of time sitting around ad-libbing. Badly. I know lots of ladies who'd disagree with me, though.

A surprisingly well made drama about the hardships of *checks notes* male strippers. While there is a lot of naked dudes performing great dance choreographies, there is also a lot of personal conflict and excess to cut deeper than the surface of these characters. Who are, again, male strippers!

Hook...err, male stripper with a heart of gold? The parallels with Boogie Nights are obvious, but whereas Dirk Diggler is pathetically naive, Mike is obviously aware of the traps and trappings of his lifestyle, and smart enough to get out. W(e)ary of taking the youthful indiscretions of Adam too far, or of becoming a washed-up caricature like Dallas, the problem is he's unable to extricate himself. Who figured, Channing Tatum can really act. And dance, cuz damn.

Channing Tatum is a male stripper, but I personally think he is tons better cast in a military movie. Matthew McConaughey just comes off as arrogant, annoying and full of himself. Cody Horn is gorgeous in this. A few funny moments, some smart dialog, but lots of sometimes humorous male stripping framed within a thin story wrapper. A great movie to watch if you want to get your woman in the mood.

It is well directed. Also, it is nice to see how much Tatum has grown as an actor. Otherwise, it can't maintain the high energy it establishes at the beginning and eventually falls flat, becoming a cliche-ridden bore by the end of the film.

A good looking film, but so lightweight and one-note that it barely registers as a "story" at all and any complexity hinting at the presence of a second note ends up being completely cliche, made all the worse by the half hour of pornagraphic padding. While the acting is fairly stilted overall, it's surprisingly non-cringeworthy with the notable exception of McConaughey, whose performance is largely a poor impersonation of Tom Cruise's Frank T.J. Mackey. (renormed rating; was 41 on 11/4/12)

Soderbergh is on top form in this deceptively dark movie. It's a movie about male strippers, sure, and that's why the majority of its audience will have turned up to see it, but it's also a movie about the American Dream, about what it means to get by in life for these men. There's an intelligent message to be had about 21st-century America, capitalism and the plight of the working-class here. Seriously. Or you can just look at the guys' abs, I dunno, whatever.

Second half drags a little bit, but Soderbergh is good at hedonist cinema and digital cinematography. This is the kind of movie that desperately needs a hugely charismatic, flamboyant movie-star lead or two, and despite McConaughey's best efforts, no one really goes above and beyond. The most interesting part of this is the intersection of the attempted upward mobility in, and the hedonism of, late-stage capitalism.

"Magic Mike" works as a small-scale, less stylized version of "Boogie Nights". Of course, it lacks both the entertainment value and the thematic potency of Anderson's masterpiece, but Soderbergh's low-key, naturalistic helming, a script that surprisingly avoids total surrender to cliché and the strong cast (McConaughey, in particular, is delightful in a tailor-made part) contribute to what is actually a compelling and even thoughtful film about male strippers and the ensuing lifestyle.

While it took a while, the film won me over with its energy, its charm, its dedication to the craft, and the wink that every scene gave at the audience. The element of camp keeps things from being too awkward, and while the story is familiar, it's well-told and enjoyable to sit through. The actors really sell it, and while I can't necessarily recommend seeing this if you're not into males, there's enough here for all persuasions to keep it from being a terrible time.

Enjoyable and well made film that sets a benchmark for male stripping in cinema as it shows it in abundance and does it well. Scratching at the surface reveals a bit of timely economic anxiety, as well as how this intersects with being fulfilled with making money, but doesn't really manage to conclude this part of the story as there ends up being a little too much going on in the film (especially the wasted side-plot with the pills).

A lighter, smaller version of Boogie Nights, really. The first half is funny and enjoyable but the second half finds the script holding back and as a result, it becomes much less compelling. Magic Mike was a film I initially had no interest in seeing, but after hearing so many good things I gave it a go. And I can't see what all the fuss is about. The whole thing is completely pointless. Soderbergh hasn't made a decent film for a long time and this is arguably down there with his worst. Tatum is a horrible actor and the same can be said for Pettyfer. Girl porn via Soderbergh. The story line is somewhat traditional if you boil it down, but there's a lot that keeps a modern edge. It's not an empty-headed, shallow exploitation of chiseled men dancing; indeed there's actual substance and character to find here. Ironically, the most entertaining parts of the film are the absurdly choreographed strip shows, and the substance gets dry fast every time. Not sure if that's the gay talking, or just the way it is. I like to think the latter. Tatum is pretty great, though, but McConaughey really surprised me. Man has some serious acting chops it turns out.

Steven Soderbergh effortlessly mixes a mixture of near kitchen-sink realism and the 'exotic' world of male stripping. The strip scenes are shot with energy and excitement while the human drama is excellent - great performances from Tatum and McConaughey - with a great undertone focusing on the economic downturn and the plight of the American working class - I especially loved how the strippers take on traditional working-class roles in their performances.

The one flaw about marketing 'Magic Mike' to the "Sex & the City" type crowds is that this movie isn't so much about naked men as it is about men who work as strippers. There is character. There is story. Indeed, some of it is the cliche of the seedy underbelly of stripping, but it still keeps it more interesting that just a celebrity Chippendale's show. And for the men scared away, the men are no more naked than Hulk Hogan was and there are enough naked ladies to keep your interest.
