The wrangling between the two leads results in a subcutaneous fluttering and tension that goes on to expose both individuals as frauds in their own peculiar ways, while also affirming there's a certain magic to deception that parallels closely with the creative process, and what it means to be an artist. The comedy is breezy, but I think this movie has been unfairly ridiculed, because it's actually pretty good.

No magic to speak of, and not a whole lot of moonlight, either. Some performances and bits of dialogue are amusing, but ultimately this is one of those regrettable Allen offerings in which the vivacious young beauty is supposed to end up with the cranky, smug, self-serious middle-aged intellectual because of course she is--he's irresistible, can't you see that?

Topping off one of Allen's movies with a twist is like serving Ice Cream Sundae with a side of potato salad. I'm not saying it doesn't work - heck, it might be the best thing since the Peanut-Butter-and-Bacon Sandwich - but I can't help but feel slighted for the significant dent it put in my suspension of disbelief. As a similarly themed movie once suggested: you may be looking for the secret but you won't find it, because you don't really want to work it out. You want to be fooled.

Magic in the Moonlight is light fun, but halfway through it begins to feel like a Colin Firth stand-up special. Which is good and bad. Firth can dish out Allen's lines fabulously, with a dry bluntness that got me every time. There's alot of that. So much that eventually even Stone turns into a device to get quips out of Firth. He's got a good character, and I laughed nearly continuously, but everyone and everything else about the movie gets short changed for him to shine.

Allen really plays tricks on the viewer in this one, seemingly going awry at every turn but redeeming the film quite nicely as it progresses. Sophie's mystical powers are a transparent metaphor from the get-go. What really bewildered me is how she could fall for Stanley, and how he could be so oblivious - but even those things are rather smoothed out in the end. I'm still not sure about Stanley's thing for Nietzsche, who Allen may not realize was as anti-rationalist as he was an atheist.

Cut price Woody explores familiar terrain--faith vs reason, finding meaning in a seemingly meaningless world etc etc--like master Bergman before him, but this film really is a hasty, thrown together film that reeks of laziness. The script is cliched and predictable, and while the two leads are charming and pleasant, they fail to transcend the obviousness of the material. It's a breezy ride to be sure, but unlike other 'featherweight' Allen projects it's entirely insubstantial.

For a guy who once said he considers suicide as a daily option, Woody Allen has an unparalleled ability to make comedies that are breezy without being insubstantial, and put a smile on my face from beginning to end. It's just such a pleasure to spend time in his universe. This is one of his best statements yet on the necessity of finding hope and beauty in a world which is cruelly rational.

Funny, enjoyable and captivating, "Magic In The Moonlight" is a cute affair, although definitely not essential. It's not without its cliches, but with a fine acting ensemble and lots of cynical humour, it's certainly a winner.

I'm out of step with public opinion on a Woody Allen film - and not for the first time (see also: To Rome With Love). I really enjoyed this fun fantasy, the cast really mesh with the mannered feeling, and the logic vs love/fantasy vs reality themes sit perfectly with the wryly amusing story. It's not one of Allen's best, but I'd happily recommend it to anyone.

I may be in the minority for thinking this movie is decent. The cinematography and dialogue alone make it worth seeing. It's not as morose as some of his works, and at times it's almost uplifting. That said, it's nothing exceptional.

In which Woody attempts to combine Allenian clichés and misanthrope-discovers-meaning-of-life clichés hoping that they prove each other's twist. In the process, he comes up with a slight and agreeable picture -there's treacle, there's the obligatory run-through of the Important Allen Themes and there's the charm of Firth and Stone, feeding each other off. Oh and there is a Woody jazzy soundtrack to remind us what we're all watching just as the film tries to pull us in.

OK it's official, it's time for Woody to retire. This is a flat 60s style Rock Hudson, Doris Day rom-com, with the same uninspired dialogue, trite plot, and in this case a terrible waste of talent, especially Emma Stone. It even traipses off into an existence of God sub-plot, with similarly shallow results. Big disappointment. BTW, isn't it about time to stop using the pretentious phrase "the South of France", which this does 5 or 6 times? How provincial.

I kept wondering when the twist would come, in disbelief the plot would truly be this predictable and plain. Surely it wasn't just that, and surely the characters weren't these carboard cutouts flapping in the wind!... Then the end started coming (slowly) and I realised there never was going to be more than the superficial pretentiousness and the blandness not even the setting could make entertaining. Then I saw it was a movie made by a pedo rapist and I was very disgusted I watched it

Pretty bland stuff with no real wacky late-era Woody eccentricities to grab onto. Firth and Stone have negative chemistry, and this is probably one of the least substantial explorations of the Allen worldview - what if there was an atheist and he was a jerk, but also he gets vindicated and gets the girl? Zzzz. I enjoyed briefly seeing Erica Leerhsen, who apparently has vanished off the face of the planet in the ten years since this movie.

Everything about this movie feels cheap, shallow and instant. There is zero chemistry between characters, awful script and awkward story development. It was not my choice to watch as I would've probably sensed it before I would've watched it. It is the worst movie by Allen of the ones I've managed to watch.

Watson is delightful and Firth suitably dapper in this interesting and entertaining exploration of what is essentially reasoning. Allen does well to infuse the film with a magical element that does not come across as lame or forced for the viewer. The film can only be helped by its setting in the French Riviera.

Magic in the Moonlight starts of strong, delivering witty dialogue and whimsical set pieces that one would come to expect from Woody Allen. It also delivers contrived character motivations and an overshadowing sense of smugness that one would also expect from Woody Allen. If you can overlook the latter, than this is a moderately enjoyable film with a fair bit for charm from Firth and Stone.

What a horrid "love story"; I'd describe it as an overly broad variation on My Fair Lady. Firth makes a valiant effort to infuse his character with some charm, but the script just makes him seem like an total asshole. I didn't much care for Emma Stone's acting either.

During the whole experience you cannot lose the feeling that the movie is trying to trick you. Which IS the best part. It also fits well with the theme. The movie is easy on the eyes, doesn't try to pretend it's really something and flows effortlessly. Firth is playing the game well, and Emma Stone i'm beginning to adore. Thing is, the whole experience is really nothing more but light jazz tunes played outside your room on a Sunday morning. Pleasing but oh so momentary.

Possibly the most underwhelming, soporific Woody Allen film I've experienced. It's a nice looking picture, sure, but there is so little going on with the characters and story, that there's a death-like atmosphere pervading half the film. A pity to waste such a talented cast on what's essentially a romance film devoid of any fervour, passion, vim, spunk, loyalty or power. That's all. The rankings will tell me which Allen films I should bother rewatching.

Finally Woody Allen conjures up some magic in this romantic comedy about spirit mediums and love. I thought that Emma Stone and Colin Firth worked really well with each other. Emma Stone was born to play roles during this time period, she just looked so great in that 20's fashion. Colin Firth was excellent as well being the brooding magician who wants to debunk Emma Stones amazing powers...

Charming, easy to watch rom-com. Firth is very English in this (aka witty and bitter), Stone's a delight, the locations, sets & costumes of the 1920's spectacular. Certainly won't be remembered as one of Allen's best, but it's quite pleasant while it lasts.

Really didn't enjoy the romance angle that much. It didn't feel authentic at all and there was little to no chemistry between Firth and Stone. The humor was spotty, with the dialogue being the normal Allen fare. I don't know if I'm getting over it from seeing about 50 different movies with the same old script, but most of it left me feeling flat. I like the idea of a comedy being about a exposing a medium in that time period though.

not a "terrible" film, but it becomes considerably worse when you realize woody allen was at the helm. it explores the issues of life, death and the futility of mortality, which in some way or another, allen has been exploring throughout his long career, but it was never handled in quite as childish a manner as it was here. this film felt simple, the story felt thin and gimmicky. moreover, the chemistry between firth and stone was so off - given that she looked about 12. overall disappointing.

It's new Woody Allen movie time of the year again, and this time is a super-sweet romantic comedy with very likeable characters. Colin Firth is great as a cynical, pessimistic snob; I just loved his character. Overall, this film reminded me Oscar Wilde plays - witty dialogs and plot that explores human psychology. Also, it's very positive film, so unlike Woody Allen. Same time next year, eh?

Firth and Stone are among the most charismatic actors around, and they're perfectly watchable together. Allen's nostalgia for the 20s, so strongly evident in "Midnight in Paris", really shows through again with Khondji's golden-hued photography and the quality production design. The problem, as always with Allen's lesser films, is the writing. It's cliched, predictable and utterly monotonous with its endless repetition of the supernatural vs skepticism stuff. Not at all bad, but forgettable.

The best Woody Allen since the 90s. There's a tongue-in-cheek campiness to it all, with a smart use of the mystic elements to sustain the romp. And this playfulness, especially with Firth talking himself in and out of love, is the payoff. It's a master making something very light and beautiful with great esprit.

With the exception of the great "Match Point", Allen's last 15 years of films all kind of blur into a Euro-set stew of low-stakes romantic hijinx with appealing casts. Here's another one of those. Perfectly pleasant but I can't shake the feeling that I've seen it all before (by the same guy...and recently, no less), and that I should be rewatching "Manhattan" instead. The twist reveal is pretty ace, but Firth's character is so boorish it's impossible to buy Stone falling for him.

The answer to 'what if Woody Allen got lazy?' MiTM shows many of Allen's trademark features, such as sympathetic characters, great dialogue and a friggin' solid cast, but fails to bring these ingredients together in a great film. The plots to blame for that, with un-nuanced turns and an ending that can be figured out an hour in advance.

Woody Allen has never been shy when it comes to talking about his refusal to believe in God. In 2008, he told Newsweek he doesn't believe life has any purpose: "Your perception of time changes as you get older, because you see how brief everything is. You see how meaningless. ... I don't want to depress you, but it's a meaningless little flicker." And combing through a litany of his quotes from six decades of filmmaking, it's not hard to find that sentiment reiterated elsewhere. (pluggedin.com)
