On the eve of the 40th anniversary of the Gay Rights Movement, the film explores the drama, struggle and enduring legacy of the first-ever gay play and subsequent Hollywood movie to successfully reach a mainstream audience. Beloved by some for breaking new ground, and condemned by others for reinforcing gay stereotypes, The Boys in the Band sparked heated controversy that still exists four decades later. Engaging oral history of the production of the play and film THE BOYS IN THE BAND also effectively contextualises the material amongst the 'gay rights' movement of the 60s and 70s; poignant recollections from all the principle players makes this a sturdy and involving film.

"A slick making-and-unmaking-of documentary about the play and film that first seriously addressed American homosexuality, and its complex role in queer cultural history." - Bill Weber
