So... they decided to take the most annoying, obnoxious tropes of both chick flicks and musicals and put them all in one movie. I can only assume a drunken wager between studio executives was involved.

Manages to hit almost every single chick-flick and musical stereotype, which would be a milestone if it was a satire. However it's not and portrayed as a serious musical, or rather as seriously as musicals can be. Now if you like musicals or ABBA this is probably a treat but if you're like me and don't think is just painful to sit through. PAINFUL.

The worst thing I've ever seen. Jesus, when even Meryl Streep is unbearable you know something's up. The only reason it has ONE point is because it's not as horribly offensive as the things I actually did give 0. I don't even mind ABBA or their music or anything, it's the acting and everything else that sucks so completely horribly.

What a piece of flowery crap. I had minimal expectations based on the strong cast, but it quickly failed to impress on any level. I'm sure it was a blast to make, but it was hellish torture to watch. Honestly, I didn't even finish it. These films that try to build a story around an artist's catalog of greatest hits don't work unless they're an artistic concept piece. This just had a bunch of horrible camera work, a corny emotional schlop of a script and mixed results on the song presentations.

What a cut-and-paste mess this "lively" musical is. Sure it moves and jumps around, but that's all it does. The story is paper-thin, barely touched-on. The romance doesn't work in the slightest with Streep's or Seyfried's plots, there isn't an ounce of character development, and after all is said and done - the one plot thread holding this together is thrown out. The songs are fun, the dancing poorly choreographed, Pierce Brosnan is as terrible as they say, and overall, this movie is plain bad.

PS: There's nothing worst than an actress who believes that being always with a crying-face and tears almots falling, it's some kind of signal of good acting.

this is essentially an Adam Sandler movie: a bunch of (theoretically) A-list actors getting paid to go on vacation. the only difference is that Adam Sandler never ruined ABBA, one of the greatest bands of all time, and at least had the courtesy to cast Norm Macdonald in small roles. had Norm played Pierce Brosnan's role, this movie would be incredible. as it stands, it's a dull comedy of errors, where the biggest error is watching it

Just about every movie imaginable is better than this piece of shit. I saw this in theaters when my aunt shangai'd my fiance and I and I came out with a mouth tasting of bile and deaf in one ear. Keep away from middle aged single women. Or your mom. Unless you want to hear ABBA for the next four months every time you're within their singing voice. The one redeeming factor is Amanda Seyfried's big boobs and penchant for wearing a bathing suit while on screen.

Mostly good parts but Streep should have bowed out for someone younger who could sing and dance better, and Brosnan's singing was embarrassing (love him to death otherwise), but fortunately he doesn't sing too often. Why didn't they at least dub their voices? If Clooney could be dubbed for O Brother! so too could she.

The plot is extremely flimsy, the choreography is mostly laughably bad, the songs almost always feel incredibly forced, quite a few of the characters are loud, shallow and annoying (apart from Sophie, who is lovely and a couple of the males who are adequate), the humour is generally not what you'll be laughing at and two of the three romances (Streep's and Walter's) are completely unbelievable. Nothing in this film makes it deserve to have musical numbers in it, it seems that the music in this movie just impedes further plot development, the good singers belong in high school theater and the good actors should not be singing, the saving graces of this movie are that it does have some good actors, although they don't get to act much with all the song and dance going on, and it has some fantastic scenery of the Mediterranean. And there's ABBA, if that's your thing.

Mamma Mia is a film that isn't targeted at people like myself. So I was never going to like this film. However I do like Abba and I love many of their songs. But what I hate about this film is the interpretation, execution and ultimately theft of these songs. From now on it seems when people hear these songs they now associate them with the Mamma Mia film & stage show. As apposed to the the great 70s pop group Abba. And also I just find the likes of Pierce Brosnan singing incredibly unsettling.

While nobody doubts the talents of ABBA, using this as an excuse for the adaptation of such a ridiculous and contrived excuse for a musical isn't something to be encouraged. Peel back the layers and you'll find beyond the odd decent performance and the stellar music that there lies a gaping chasm where the film completely lacks any kind of soul. Instead it rips this from the music, something which cannot be commended when coupled with the torridness of the plotline dragging behind it.

Loved ABBA - but this is to Abba what George W Bush is to international diplomacy. Apart from the fact that the actors in a musical can't sing and there is no plot and the humour isn't funny.... Best summed up by a little known Abba track 'Disillusion!'

This is absolutely hilarious! I've also seen the play twice & adore it, so the movie had a lot to live up to, & it did! My only complaints were that, sadly, I felt Brosnan was a little lacking (especially during the songs) & I felt Streep was about ten years older than her character probably should be - but, her acting made up for it! Otherwise, Skarsgard & Firth: brilliant! Walters & Baranski: perfectly cast! Even Seyfried & Cooper were great! The songs even translated really well! Awesome!!

God, this is bad. Idiotic "plot", apparently suggested by the collection of some--but, thankfully not all--of my favorite ABBA songs, and they are all massacred. Only one cast member can really sing: Christine Baranski. Seyfried sort of can, but she's so very irritating you just want her to shut up. Meryl Streep has proven she knew how to sing at one time (in Postcards from the Edge), but she seems to have forgotten much of what she knew. Pierce Brosnan is AWFUL. The Greek island is gorgeous.

Young cast is a bit of a let down, but the grown ups make up for it. The plot takes leaps, has holes (and bears similarities to the Three Men and a Baby/Lady arc) and Pierce's singing is a bit dodgy. Plus its a bit long. But I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this film. Worth a look. But trim the music numbers and make them less obviously music video... Oh, and it needs a better Choreographer

MAMMA MIA! is a film completely tuned in to the needs of its audience, if that audience desires nothing more than strip-mining well-crafted pop songs in service of drunken celebrity karaoke. Seyfried and Streep are admirably committed--and can actually carry a tune--while the rest is as hollow and saccharine as a chocolate egg.

A bland, ineptly directed effort that wants to be simple, glossy, sugary fun but isn't inspired enough visually to actually BE so. It doesn't help that the cast's singing abilities range from pretty good (the great Amanda Seyfried) to overblown (Meryl Streep, who shouldn't be here) to outright awful (Pierce Brosnan, who REALLY shouldn't be here).

It was nice that they recruited the stage director of Mamma Mia! to make her feature film debut with the bigscreen version of jukebox musical sensation. Maybe someone should have first determined whether or not she had any flair for working in the very different medium. The film is horribly clumsy, all jump zooms and painful clowning. The ABBA songs are wedged in haphazardly and often sung with with so much vigor by the actors that it starts to come across as a weirdly catchy form of aggression.

A wild, campy mix of sitcom-esque green screens and goofy comedy, Greek island-breeze(d) through ridiculous plot points, and frequent brazen musical numbers. Plus a weird amount of sweeping cinematic camera movement. Any doubt on whether I liked all this was washed away with the perfect Pied Piper-esque rendition of "Dancing Queen" and the adorable three-dad date on a boat that followed. It drags a bit pre-wedding with two long, sappy songs, but gets back on track with the ceremony drama.

Cheerfully silly jukebox musical blows away all those that came after it by settling on a frothy confection of a screenplay that's really just an excuse for a loveable cast to gamely attempt ABBA karaoke, to greater (Streep, Baranski) and lesser (Walters, Brosnan) success. Great fun if you click with its admittedly indulgent and even campy tone, with Streep proving she can bring her mettle to any project, and Brosnan, Firth, Skarsgard, Walters and Baranski having a whale of a time.

I think because Abba's music is so happy and fun and joyful, it doesn't lend itself well to conflict or drama, yet because this is a film and needs both, songs had to be pressed into play that don't really do the job, such as Meryl Streep's over-angsty "The Winner Takes it All." Streep is terrific in just about every scene. I'm not too impressed with Brosnan as a singer, but his acting is pretty good, especially in the "The Winner Takes it All" scene, when all the attention is on Streep.

It's fascinating that their technique for editing a stage musical down into a movie was to cut everything *but* the songs. There's multiple sections where one ABBA song is followed by another and another with no breaks. In a normal musical that can work - I mean, that's Hamilton. But in a jukebox musical, the songs weren't made to be part of a coherent story, and telling one requires a heck of a lot more scaffolding than this. Still, the excess of spectacle is compelling - it's an Experience.
