When buddy took over as orchestra conductor I was like, ok - I'm out.

Being the original which is ripped off does not always guarantee quality, and this is an example where a good concept completely fails in execution thanks to bad acting and flat direction. The Hollywood version of the story is far more interesting.

A curious film that leaves me unsatisfied, a feeling I can appreciate in that 'hidden gem' variety of low-budget filmmaking. There is an obvious aesthetic quality to the film, technically astute, but whether it's the DVD or the thing itself, the video/audio are crusty as fuck. A shame about the audio especially, because some of the music is really great (not to mention classic - Monteverdi/Mozart).

Is the guy in the nuthouse *really* an alien? One of the few Third World attempts at sf that really works. Seems to be getting ripped off quite often lately, which is of course further proof of how good it is

It is one of those movies from that era that aimed to be profound, being long, peculiar, and devoid of explanations. The later version was mediocre, and unfortunately, this version was even worse.

Better than "K-Pax", that's for sure. And on a technical level and in terms of directorial style this was a good deal more accomplished than I had expected of an Argentinian movie from the 80s.

My favorite moment has to be the concert.
