Man-Thing

Fascinating to witness a pre-MCU Kevin Feige produced Marvel movie that is essentially a horror movie version of Swamp Thing. Man-Thing is not exactly an inspired title, the acting is particularly weak (Aussies doing Louisiana accents? No thanks), but the special effects are pretty fantastic when displaying the kills. Following the same basic story structure of Pumpkinhead, it warrants a watch for the Marvel factor and the mangled corpses. Man-Thing. What a title.

This wasn't a very good adaptation of the Marvel character, but it was an ok movie. Most of the effects were decent, although I wish Man-Thing's design was closer to the comic book version. The story kept my attention, but wasn't anything special. I thought the cast did a decent job. Overall, its a kind of average horror movie.

Bad southern accent;, a flat, uncharismatic lead; a ridiculously abrupt romance; & some chintzy efx aren't what kills this. The night swamp sets - though fake- look great & the script makes relative sense, but the first 2/3rds, like many slasher films, attempts to build suspense by putting characters we don't care about in danger. Worse, for most of the film nothing major's at stake. If the bad guys win, we lose... the swamp? And one that's obviously set on a sound stage?

Man-Shit.
