An initially interesting idea is immediately trampled by the film's own failure to understand it. It ignores an opportunity for satire and instead throws some absolutely ridiculous subplots in. What would happen if one of the nation's funniest men became it's leading one? Who knows, as instead of answering the question it poses the film is revealed to be a boring thriller about a fixed election wrapped in fake political satire. Utterly unconvincing as a result. Not really funny either.

A comedy, a serious drama, a thriller, a message movie? It's practically every genre fighting to remain a comedy, but at the end of the day, it's just one big confused flop of a movie.

The plot is so uninspired, full of plot holes, laughable character decisions and actions, that it makes the film unwatchable. Also, the change of direction from comedy to a thriller, what the fuck? Bonus points for Leslie Knope.

Full of nice ideas and good points, but suffers too much from lack of direction. Is it a comedy or a conspiracy? Is it about a comedian becoming president or big business ruining politics?

I would flip to different channels during Linney's scenes because her character was so uncomfortable to watch.

Where's the comedic, political satire that we saw in the trailer? It's like two different movies!

Yet another film that gets lost in identity crisis - is it a comedy? Is it a drama? Where did this love story come from? Ultimately the question becomes: how much longer do we have to put up with this mediocrity?

If you're dissatisfied with the political process, go work to make the Democrats (Republicans) more progressive (conservative [whatever]). Third parties don't actually change anything, they just allow you to feel like you're making a difference! You're really not! This isn't even a review of the movie anymore, but I don't care! Grrrrrr!

Considering I don't like Robin Williams, this film still managed to impress me. It fools you into thinking it's going to be trite political satire, but it subtly introduces thematics of postmodernity that would make the likes of Don Delillo and David Foster Wallace happy. The whole point of the film is actually beyond the plot and the characters.

A schizophrenic film that jarringly shifts gears from what is seemingly a rather effective satire to a thriller. What. The. Hell?

Really weak story, inconsistent, that not developed. And, it is not exactly a comedy also because it is not funny, at any time.

Man of the Year STARTS down the right path but the second half of the film is ALL wrong. As soon as Robin Williams' funnyman character-turned-presidential-nominee decides to drop out of the race, this movie goes from hero to zero in 1.8 seconds flat.

Very good concept for a movie. With all the comedy news on tv every day you might be fooled by the fact that the smart, whitty, presentors may make a better president than the one in power (only in America though).

Confused and decidedly indecisive, "Man of the Year" is eager to mix light-hearted comedy, melodrama and serious political commentary, but fails not only in combining them, but also in exploring them individually.

Not bad, but not great either. Good pacing, as we've come to expect from Levinson. Surprising thematic depth considering the plot.

Based on the flawed premise that a faulty computer program could declare the wrong man President of the US. The storyline was badly flawed but sometimes engaging. The script was weak and disappointing. Only 50% of Robin Williams jokes worked. Laura Linney was hamstrung by the bad script. Lewis Black and Christopher Walken were mostly entertaining, but Jeff Goldblum was not. The movie tries to spotlight government waste and political apathy. An OK movie with a reasonably good moral message.

Man of the Year works for the first half, but completely falls off the rails in the second. I absolutely hated the second portion of the film, and because of that, I can't recommend it. Coming away from it, I had a terribly negative opinion just because of how awful the final 45 minutes were. If you want to watch Man of the Year and have a good time, quit after Robin Williams either wins or loses the election. You get to avoid an atrocious political "thriller" if you do.

Not funny enough to be a comedy, or clever enough to be a satire. It's not weighty or meaningful enough to be a drama either, and certainly not tense or interesting enough to be a thriller. This film then is a non-entity. None of the performances are particuarly bad; in fact Williams is okay and Linney is actually quite good, but the material is so dull & insipid that there was never any chance of them redeeming this. It's not a bad idea, but Levinson does absolutely nothing original with it.

The only thing you think five minutes into this movie is "I wish that this was actually about Jon Stewart." Little do you know, it descends quickly into a movie you wouldn't wish on even Pauly Shore.

Satire doesn't really work when it's divorced from any kind of reality. Notable for the music choices, which seem to have been decided entirely at random.

I mean, no, this isn't a masterpiece of comedy or anything, but come on, I liked it just fine. I thought the story was good and that Robin Williams was likable enough (as per usual) to deliver some laughs. It's never going to be remembered as among Robin Williams' best, but it shouldn't be remembered as among his worst either.

I enjoyed this well enough, although a fair few of the jokes haven't aged especially well, and the plot is a little loose in places. Gotta say, I have to wonder how much more I might have enjoyed it watching it in say, 2015 or earlier - the parallels between Williams' character and the Trump election, although the politics are mostly different, is just wild. A story that's meant to be funny due to how unbelievable it is falls down a little in the aftermath of Trump's campaign.

Seen: 2. I decided to give this another shot, before the Trump presidency is up. It has some poignant and funny moments, and could work well as a focused, punchy political satire, but the movie is a mess. It's like two movies mashed together, and the thriller half of it is unrealistic, weak, and boneheaded. The movie gets a downgrade upon second viewing.
