SPOILER ALERT: Reminiscent of Ray in its understated observational style, social concerns and cultural specificity, Mandabi has a sharp clear eyed focus of its satiric targets. Sembene builds an effective microcosm of a thoroughly corrupt society through a careful accretion of detail, and the performances are appealingly unselfconscious. The use of color is also impressive in its texture and detail. It's just unfortunate that its moral perspective is so crudely articulated in its final moments.

The main character strings us along on an excruciating comedy of errors.

Overexploited 3rd world cinema. There is not a single french in the movie, but it is recorded as just french movie. And the names of the actors are a bit from islam, a bit local and Cristoph Colomb! You should see that!

A class apart. Simple and yet profound at the same time. Glad that I got to watch the movie.
