A very pretty film, particularly the way Borzage photographs Loretta Young, but it's Tracy's complex and conflicted performance that dominates the film. It's a film full of warmth and joy, but it's never afraid to let some bitterness and tragedy into its world, and those contrasts are wonderful to watch. In a lesser film I might talk about the tone being inconsistent, but here I found it almost always spot on, swerving only because that's how life is for these characters.

Emotionally direct story about a drifter (Spencer Tracy) and a waif (Loretta Young), on the surface an ill-matched couple, is ultimately too simple to make a lasting impression, despite the occasional special moment or nice shot.

Spencer Tracy, a freeloading bum finds a starving helpless Loretta Young and takes her under his wing and gives her a home. And it's done so beautifully with the Borzage touch and while it doesn't have the same kind of climaxes as his legendary silents, it's still an glowing love story with Loretta Young looking the part starving-skinny and shining and Tracy as the calm charmer without a worry in the world except this girl. One of the best early Borzage sound romances.

Enjoyed this until I realized an unspoken theme of the film, apparently condoned by the filmmakers: they 'shack up' & are sleeping together before marriage, with predictable results. Their immorality was reflected in real life as Young & Tracy began a year-long affair, even though Tracy was married with children and both supposedly Catholic. Tracy's character was also too much of an a-hole. Lots to like though. Very unique and fun otherwise. This film could have been great - it's too bad.
