Renowned and notorious photographer, artist, and filmmaker, Larry Clark has written and directed his new film, Marfa Girl, which takes place in Marfa, Texas (pop. 1,800). Marfa exists at a particular cultural nexus with a constant clash between the art community (inspired to come to Marfa by the American sculptor, Donald Judd), the white community and the Mexican American community. On top of that theres a smothering Border Patrol presence despite the fact the Mexican border is 68 miles away. (imdb)

it would be easy to call this inconsequential larry clark, perhaps more importantly it's unavoidably banal.

Unlike some, I don't preemptively go into each of Clark's movies thinking he's obsessed with shirtless boys and teenage girls fucking. I'm hesitant to whitewash the guy as *just* a pervert even though he very well might be one. Why? Well, I think Bully and Kids are damn good movies - Roger Ebert has my back on this. Marfa Girl, however, is not a good movie. The poor attempt to show repression via oppressive isolation backfires into something nauseating and boring as sin. Try again, Larry Clark.

I don't quite get why people obsess about the sex in Larry Clark's movies. Yes, there's a lot of it, being performed by some rather young people. But this movie is about so much more than that--people whose bleak lives are full of emptiness and despair, and they're getting along how they can. One of the ways is to simply connect with other people--which is where the sex comes in. There are some really great scenes in this, Jeremy St. James is excellent in an extremely troubled character.

I can see how the incessant teen free-love stuff would put some people off (this time, even if they like Larry Clark). What bothered me more was that it ultimately seemed a bit random. The dialogue has ups and downs, and the story isn't sure if it wants to be laid-back slacker-core or build up toward some sort of a climax.
