Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love

This documentary features a rather no-nonsense, apathetic style of narration. It has a wistful, nostalgic sense to itself - of course it does, its looking back at around 1960. Its a somewhat calm and sedate watch, which may mean that you'd find it boring but personally, I quite liked the sort of hazy, wistful sense the floaty music in the background emphasised. Its not exactly a greatly engrossing watch for the duration but its an ok watch.

Unfocused and rambling. Do not expect to learn anything new about Cohen or much at all about Marianne Ihlen or their relationship.

Broomfield had an affair with Marianne on a Greek island, but only has spotty access to the eponymous relationship itself, which may or may not have been deep and meaningful. With Leonard, that old rake, you never know. So what this film presents is mainly known material recounted once again, with the mystical words of love remaining buried in the poet's songs.

Troubled by no official Cohen music which might suit the ramshackle narrative, but ultimately leads to a confused, uneven documentary with only a couple of heartfelt moments.

Unfocused documentary from Bloomfield. As he doesn't have enough footage, he extends the scope beyond Marianne & Leonard’s relationship into their lives elsewhere, the island Hydra and artists that lived there, and the effect the way of life had on the children. It provides an overview of Leonard’s career but it’s not a proper biography. Still, it’s a look into another era with rare footage that should please the fans. And it shows how they had feelings for each other right until the end
