The style is theatrical, not particularly realistic or modernistic, but it's a beautifully made single-location, real-time mystery-drama reminiscent of Agatha Christie whodunnits and "12 Angry Men". The twists are unpredictable but sensible, and the entire cast is formidable. If you've seen "Army of Shadows", then you already know Ventura, Meurisse and Reggiani as members of the Resistance, although that was made 10 years later and "Marie-Octobre" takes place 10 years after the war.

Although the manufacturing of suspense is transparently obvious and partly seems forced, it functions as a vehicle for enjoyment.

There are films that get the classic status without no objective reason. Marie-Octobre is a good example of such an oeuvre. It's merely a plot that looks interesting only on paper plus a cast comprised of the best french actors of that time (which does not make automatically a good cast). The director adds absolutely nothing to this formula. It's boring, silly, and interminable. Not for a second can you believe what is happening on screen and the actors seem to bore even each other.

While never up to par with the likes of '12 Angry Men' or 'An Inspector Calls', this will be of interest to anybody who appreciates either of those (or theater adaptations in general).
