Pretty good Warner crime film ripped from the headlines, with Davis as a hooker informing on Lucky Luciano (under another name, of course), and Humphrey Bogard as the DA.

Pauline Kael: "Davis is the embodiment of the sensational side of 30s movies. The film has the tawdry simplicities of many of the 30s movies that were built out of headline stories, but it also has more impact than most of the melodramas played out in more elevated surroundings, and when Davis tells Luciano-Ciannelli, "I'll get you even if I have to crawl back from my grave to do it," you believe it." And, on Bogart, "...never at his best when cast on the side of officialdom--but then, who is?"

Definitely a fun one! You get to watch Bette spew out a host of great lines, like "It's a clip joint!" Plus there are great scenes played between two of the screen's alltime legends. And the final fade into the fog features a most ambivalent ending indeed, especially for the Hollywood of that era.

Box OP Bette Davis.

The film reunites Davis and Bogart one year after "The Petrified Forest", but Bogart, playing a fictionalized version of prosecutor Thomas Dewey, has an extremely straight and dull part here. It's really Davis' film, and she's really great.

Davis is very good, but this drags at times. Bogart is competent but feels a bit wasted in a smaller role as a crusading district DA. At times it comes off a little stilted and really the only thing distinguishing it from an average crime melodrama picture of the period is the heavy female presence in big roles, including a strong female lead. For the most part the men take a back seat in this one. Decent but disappointing for a Bacon/Davis/Bogart teaming.

Definitely a intriguing story! But lacked the intensity expected for a film filled with gangsters, prostitutes, abuse, killing and on top of that being inspired by the very recent conviction of Lucky Luciano. What this has got going for it is a terrific performance from Bette Davis who in a rare moment shows up badly beaten. Violence to women which was not something glamorous Hollywood wanted to show much back in those days. Not to this degree anyway. And that's this movie's main selling point.
