Like the previous film Luna produced by Klushantsev, the film Mars was created at the intersection of educational science films and science-fiction. It consists of seven pieces, which tell of the physical conditions on planet Mars, the possibility of life on Mars and what forms it might take, of Martian canals and "seas" of the Red Planet. In addition, the film includes the director's fantasy hypothetical forms of life on mars, and of the exploration and colonization of Mars in the near future. (letterboxd.com)

To still see Schiaparelli's canali after Mariner 4 seems hard to defend, and the enthusiasm for the notion of Martian life is absurdly over the top, but still quite interesting and the dog is hilarious. Could the filmmakers have imagined that half a century later the world's second-richest man (as of yesterday) would be aiming to reach Mars not for any of the reasons mentioned here, but as a "back up" in case this planet becomes so thoroughly ruined by our presence as to be uninhabitable?
