The second of Nikkatsu's trilogy of softcore melodramas looking at prostitution in various Japanese cities, this dark look at ritualistic temple sex in Edo from director Noboru Tanaka is quite a departure from the light, comic tone of Chusei Sone's Maruhi: Joro Ichiba. I feel like every cinephile eventually gets to a point where they feel like they've finally seen everything. But, once in a while, a film pops up that dispels that notion. While The Hell-Fated Courtesan can't be said to have the most intricate or interesting plot, nor does it have very deep characters. What it does have is numerous scenes that had me cackling out loud. It's a weird, wild ride that entertained me more than most films I've seen recently. Way too rapey, though.
