Works on every level and more. Hasn't aged at all and it is hilarious at parts. Had anyone else directed this, it would've been their masterpiece. But for Godard, it's just another gem in a long list of fantastic movies. FUCK YOU QVT

Another Godard film that simply leaves me cold. Leaud's character is a lot like the one he plays in The Mother and the Whore -- pompous, boring and kind of a dick, spewing meaningless political soundbites. Godard seems to want to inspire something in the viewer, but exactly what is unclear. Mostly I was bored senseless (or annoyed by the "look how daring I am" stylistic flourishes) with only the occasional clever bit of dialogue or scene of genuine humanity keeping me interested.

I can appreciate this sort of counterculture attitude and Godard's liberal sympathies, but this movie failed to affect me. Aesthetically, it is among his more conservative offerings, but it's representative of his scatterbrained thematic approach. There's just too much vague and arbitrary, existential drivel preventing this film from achieving a more cohesive and powerful political and social perspective.

The problem with this film, and most everything else Godard directs, is that too much attention is called to the film itself. Instead of letting his films work as one entity, Godard loves to put cool edits, cool shots, cool dialogue, cool jokes, anything cool into his movies and his films ultimately feel like a mish-mash of things that look cool, instead of a movie that works. However, this is probably the film in which that style is most effective

Unturnawayfromable. I've debated its perfection and determined that it belongs more to the class of film of Chungking and Casablanca than any other. ---- No typos in this review UNLIKE PICKPOCKET

Godard explores youth rebellion and confusion, while maintaining his peerless and exhilarating visual style. I loved the constant interruptions, from the fighing couple of the opening scene to the bandit in the arcade room. Tarantino must be a huge fan of the renowned director. A genuinely enjoyable film, this belongs to Godard's long list of really fantastic films, suck it haters !!!

Almodovar is celebrated for his poignant explorations of gender identity, and this is no exception. He should use spell-check, though.

A film that is as incoherent, passionate, scattered, disconnected, and confused as the youthful counter-culture generation it tries to portray. But that may just be the whole point in this film that presents so many aspects of pop culture across the board. Godard's visual direction is a little sub-par here than his usual style but certain fleeting scenes were memorable. As usual, Godard doesn't present a coherent message and leaves his audience as confused as the characters he presents.

Masculine, Feminine is, for better and for worse, one of Godard's more serious films. There are a few vintage Godard "cinema moments" here, but for the most part it's fairly straight-faced. I prefer when he's being more loose than this (but without going totally overboard), like with Band of Outsiders.

It will need another viewing, but it doesn't seem as solid as other Godard films. Is it just me or are his protagonists always unlikeable assholes? I'm not saying it's a bad thing, it's just interesting. Technically, this film might be a masterpiece.

The in-your-face misogyny doesn't help a film that seems overly enamored with itself and it's political messages. Technically, this film is pretty much flawless, but it's proof that movies can often be more (or less) than the parts that make them.

As usual with Godard, it's stuff gloomy yet jovial, intelligent yet playful, bitter yet hopeful... Although it rarely display the same unrestrained passion found in Pierrot le fou or demonstrate the same acutely and aggressively critical examination found in Alphaville, it's a delight in all its bittersweet thoughtfulness and prankish charm.

My favorite Godard so far; it's conceptually interesting and appealingly thinky, but full of a charming 1960s pop culture sensibility.

The thing that bothers me about this film is the ending. After such a joyous movie (If Breathless is jazz music, Masculin, Feminin is pop music), he hits you with that cold final dialogue. WHAT A BASTARD!! But really this is a great movie. The scenes at the cinema are golden Godard. (two times)

I like the characterization here. The fearlessness of Leaud's performance, how sympathetic he is due to his undying (albeit hidden) infatuation with Goya. And her constantly evolving/devolving interest in him, never amounting to love. How, like they say, they have a grasp on their thoughts but not their emotions. It's things like this that Godard smuggles into his films, underneath the explosively stated political stances.

Extremely stylistic with my favourite flourish being some of the conversations where, very much like an interview, we are only shown one character's face - it catches the characters at their most vulnerable as they are made to bare all their beliefs before us. Godard decries pop politics and pop culture, but importantly not youth, as we see one, represented by men, and the other, represented by women, living together and having to put up with each other's differing priorities and beliefs.

idealism and pop culture face off and then explode in godard's typical scatterbrain styling. the more i see of him, the more i tend to agree with herzog's assertion that he is nothing more than intellectual counterfeit money, however viewed from the outside his films are endlessly fascinating. some troubling representation of gender in this one.

Even though the more advanced analysis and depiction of the sociopolitical atmosphere didn't impress me, the liberal style and semi-humorous acting made it quite fun to watch.

Wasn't too bad. I sometimes find this director's films a chore to get through. Lots of scenes of dialogue between young people, a mixture of idle talk, flirting and opinions, wasn't too soporific. Out of the various anonymous characters, at least there were a few who formed a continuous narrative. I didn't care too much for the attempts at deep or philosophical intertitles, or the voiceover segments. The more conventional he manages to be, the more Godard seems to me like a genuine film-maker.

Le cool Nouvelle Vague (french for 'pretentious hipster garbage') movie, but the lack of plot makes it hard to sit through. Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but my impression is that this movie throws a punch at women and their lack of interest in serious matters (Marx, counter-culture, socialist politics...). The most daringly stylish of Godard's films I have seen. The title cards make a great slogans ('The Children of Marx and Coca-Cola').

Leaud's facial expressions are so beautiful! So many scenes felt like improv, because they felt so spontaneous and genuine. God, I love the 60s youth culture.

The children of Marx and Coca-Cola. Maybe that's how Godard perceived the young adults of this time, but I feel it gave a voice to all their superficiality and awkwardness without real analysis.

Godard is a funny case ... he goes from making films I love to making films I pretty much hate with virtually no borderline cases in the space of a about a year. I say "virtually" no borderline cases since this is possibly the one film that straddles that border for me. In many ways, the film's episodic structure and the focus on the life and relationships of it's young protagonists are reminiscent of "Vivre Sa Vie", which is a film I love dearly.

Pretty typical Godard film, feeling both hugely involved in the characters (due to effective and simple camerawork and realistic performances) whilst also feeling detached from them as well (great leaps of dramatic character arcs that flippantly occur) -- it's far from being his best or worst film. Certainly boring at times with its dry romantic asides, but the politically-minded dialogue is more interesting and revealing.

"Once, with my dad, we were all eating mashed potatoes. All of a sudden, Dad stopped eating and said: 'I've got it!' My sister said 'Got what?' Dad had discovered why the Earth revolved around the Sun. Of course, Galileo discovered it first. But Dad, all of a sudden, just like that, rediscovered why the Earth revolved around the Sun. Just like Galileo must have done. So he stopped eating his mashed potatoes and said: "I've got it!" Me, I made a crack, and got the mashed potatoes in my face."

Chalk it up to my dislike of plotless films, and add to it the dizzying surrealism of the scene transitions, and the way-too-long interviews that seem to be made up on the spot: I pretty much couldn't stand any part of this, other than the beautiful black and white photography, most notably in the "evening in town" scenes.

Usually I find Godard at least interesting, but this one was tedious for me. Like a lot of Godard, there are plenty of disillusioned youths hanging out and saying things that seem intellectual to them. Leaud is as unlikeable as I usually find him in movies. I really honestly don't know if he's going for annoying or not. I kind of feel like he is, in which case he's doing it fine. A little too meta at times, but Chantal Goya's performance is pretty charming.
