Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Based on author Patrick O'Brian's series of Aubrey/Maturin novels, the film is set during the Napoleonic Wars. Crowe is Captain "Lucky" Jack Aubrey, renowned as a fighting captain in the British Navy, and Bettany is ship's doctor Stephen Maturin. Their ship, the H.M.S. Surprise, is suddenly attacked by a superior enemy. (20th Century Fox)

Packs an absolutely stellar cast and pulls no punches as to the grim reality of naval warfare. Nice people, that would be spared in a regular Hollywood film, are maimed and killed. Danger on the sea is more than just the weather and other ships. My only complaint is that the action scenes don't really flow together when compared to a more competent epic movie director, such as Ridley Scott (as no doubt the producers were hoping for Gladiator at sea). Regardless, it's still a great film.

This movie looked very expensive. The sailing life isn’t for me, I get sea sick on cruises, I would straight up die on one of these boats. The fumes from 200 men with nonstop swamp ass and morning breath.

An eminently enjoyable adventure film, M&C offers an intriguing blend of action and character development that stands out among most similar fare. Instead of going for the cheap laugh or the easy (and unbelievable) thrill, the film primarily employs quieter scenes of men telling stories, making music, and sailing the ship to connect narrative threads and increase knowledge of characters. I still really like this film now several years since its release. That speaks to its good quality, I think.

Some really good cinematography and acting, but the pacing is way too slow. I suppose it's supposed to fit the monotony of life on a ship but this just takes it too far and becomes interminable and plodding to the point where you don't care what happens.

Damn good naval adventure story. Clearly, the studio was hoping for _Gladiator_-sized box-office receipts, which it didn't get, so enjoy this movie while you can. You will never, ever see this lavish and detailed a recreation of a 19th-century frigate (interior and exterior) ever again

A well-shot and fairly well-acted historical epic. If The Last Samurai is 2003's "fun" historical epic, this is 2003's "serious" historical epic.

Rewatching again. It continues to put me me in a state of excitement and desire for brotherhood, and also in a state of dwelling for the greatness of man, the broadness of his interests and the depth of his craftmanship. Not only for what it depicts but also how: it's so well crafted and loving. It truely is Weirs masterpiece - it can't be otherwise than that he himself longed to be on such journey amidst these man, to actually be one of them - like I would, for sure!

Terrific, smart adventure movie. This is what CG animation should be used for -- to back up a story like this. Huge chunks of this movie were digitally created, but it's so well done, you don't notice, you just believe it. I greatly admire the performances, which are truly heroic and stirring, and the scientific, informative bent of the storyline. Just really well done.

Russel Crowe gets obsessed with trying to kill the captain of another ship, and all of the guy's on his ship are like "Chill Out Man". He doesn't listen so they decide to go along with it, and they end up killing some people. Oh almost forgot there are some cool naval battle scenes.

Does for water what Lawrence of Arabia did for sand. A flawlessly executed period epic that shifts effortlessly between thrilling action, sweeping panorama, and intimate character development. A fascinating subplot involving the Galapagos islands complete with Darwinian digressions only adds intrigue for the literate viewer. Crowe may be a jerk, but here his cocky self-confident persona is deployed to great effect -- although Paul Bettany steals the show as the ship's doctor/naturalist.

The story can be a bit plodding at times, but this nautical adventure plays like an Errol Flynn classic beefed up with modern film-making techniques. The chemistry between Crowe and Paul Bettany, and their relationship in the film is what really set it apart. Intelligent film-making with big thrills and terrific action -- good stuff.

Good movie that wasn't made just so they could create action sequences. This focuses mainly on crew superstitions and tactics at sea, which makes it so much better than it's plot should allow. Great focus on character, and Crowe and Bettany turn in solid performances. Oh, and look for hobbit Billy Boyd! A good, good movie worth checking out.

Extremely well done. The direction, script, and acting were all up to par leaving this one curiously underrated. Familiar story about the ego-centric mishaps of an overzealous captain stringing along his crew on a ill fated mission aboard a lacking man of war. Good to the last drop.

Peter Weir's Napoleonic wartime period film is joyous, funny, adult and exciting where Gladiator was dour, too serious, adolescent, anachronistic and turgid. Both films are equally homosocial but their common lead actor, Russell Crowe, seems to have a lot more fun in Master and Commander. It's a far better performance, too. Maybe because he wasn't trying so hard to win an Oscar.

A laudable concern for historical and nautical verisimilitude (I won't call it "realism" because I know nothing about 18th-century men-of-war) alongside broad but serviceable performances save this from the melodrama & tedium of big-budget American period pieces. I thought the French privateer would remain elusive and distant, the unattainable focus of Aubrey's obsession, and the film suffers from the silliness of the tricks and counter-tricks of the eventual confrontation.

Hunting the Acheron takes the HMS Surprise on a journey that contemplates faith, nature, creation, war, and death. These issues are always explored in binary between the two main characters, Aubrey the dreamer and Maturin the rationalist. Peter Weir is a filmmaking genius of geniuses, and M&C is his magnum opus, encompassing all of the themes he's been exploring since the 70s.

Far superior to Crowe's previous wartime commander entry Gladiator, he's compelling here in how he navigates the nuances of leadership as well as the chemistry he has with Paul Bettany. Disappointing that this didn't lead to other films but Pirates of the Caribbean became this unkillable franchise.

One of the better performances from Crowe, he is, as the title may suggest, masterful and commanding, as well as wholly respectful of himself, his crew and his ship. On top of that is the detailed portrayal of the ship and its operations during destructive battles, handled more realistically than something like Pirates of the Caribbean and most exciting for it. Wonderfully filmed, too, I'm a sucker for fog (but it certainly adds to the tension).

Nicely directed with certain feeling of classic films. It's refreshing to see well-done story with old-style naval battles and sea drama. Russell Crowe ia well cast as a Captain Jack Aubrey resembling a strong-willed character from The Gladiator. It's unfortunate that Hollywood didn't want to invest to the sequel leaving the story somewhat unfinished.

I'm glad I listened to the people who said this was underappreciated, because I otherwise had pretty much written it off as a boring, romantic, Hornblower-esque rousing naval adventure based on its outward appearance. Master and Commander is one of the few Peter Weir films that does absolutely nothing for me. I've watched it twice and both times I really wanted to enjoy it. But both viewings I clock watched and completely lost interest. Following the success of Gladiator, maybe I naively expected more from this Russell Crowe film. The performances are strong and this is undoubtedly a bold piece of filmmaking from Peter Weir. But otherwise this film feels overlong and lifeless. Clearly I'm missing something.
