This could have been a highly stimulating and even important insight into the life of Maude Lewis, in particular the intertwining of personal tragedy and art, if it was made by Peter Watkins in the style of 'Edvard Much'. But alas Walsh is not a master filmmaker like Watkins and indeed 'Edvard Munch' is a singularly brilliant film. So, we have to settle for a mostly clichéd 'struggling artist' film, but Hawkins and Hawk do elevate that genre somewhat with their sincere performances.

Despite being from NS, I wasn't real interested in this story going in, but I did enjoy my time. I didn't think it was a great movie, but it was certainly good, which is fine. However, there are elements where it rises above simply being good; namely, Sally Hawkins, who is great as the titular Maudie. This is an emotional movie, but that was expected, and Maudie was incredibly endearing, but what I didn't predict was that it would be pretty funny.

Once you get past the meticulously oddball performances crafted by Hawkins and Hawke, you'll find a story as real as real can be, about companionship, love, support and tolerance in an old-timey rural setting. Beautiful in its simplicity and realness, also interesting to learn about this actual artist.

With zeyno. This movie, which tells what kind of characters a man and a woman who grow up without love will turn into, reminded me of the lyrics of the song Man o To. Two people united in love to become one. That synergy brought out something completely different and beautiful from both people.

A more important story to somebody like me who's FROM Nova Scotia than it likely is to others. Hawkins is as-advertised: a virtuoso performance of the utmost believability. And as great as she is, luckily, Ethan Hawke damn near matches her. It takes you by surprise with humour, and has one scene in particular where it commands your emotions, sending you from laughter to stunned silence. It's a movie that lives and dies on performance, and is tremendously successful in my home province. See it!

Sally Hawkins brings out a charming performance as the titular character and Ethan Hawke doesn't trail far behind with his act of a brood of a husband. Packs a punch in emotion but has a very demure narrative. I wish I'd have liked it more since I adore slice of life types of dramas, but there were some elements that simply put me off to this movie and makes this less SoL type of experience. I'd have dropped the sub plots concerning Maudie's familial relations since they added pointless drama.

A fairly simple narrative but a beautiful and quite humbling experience driven by the very moving performance from Sally Hawkins as Maudie,

I honestly feel that a big part of my appreciation for this films is how long it's been since I watched a movie that was entirely the characters and setting, as well as my fondness for Digby, Nova Scotia. That is not, however, to take away from the performances by both bird name people - both easily worthy of nominations if not wins for statues - or from the wonderfully intimate direction of the film. It's a wonderfully sweet and endearing movie, quietly funny and deeply emotional.

Maudie is a bittersweet film. Her moments of triumph and her sincere attitude will make you smile. Her hardships throughout life will break your heart. While the story is altered from fact the movie manages to be a good drama. The leads provide top quality performances and the cinematography is beautiful. Maudie is inspiring and a very enjoyable Canadian film. You should go out of your way to see it. 4 STARS

I was extraordinarily bored with this film. I'm a little perplexed as to how this film got the green light.
