The attention to detail and the insightful romantic themes of Truffaut, the poetic grandiosity of Resnais, and the freewheeling, "pure cinema" spirit of Godard. It adds up to something touching, joyous yet melancholy, beautifully done with interesting cinematic techniques and great splashes of color. And it's wrapped around an intriguing crime story (shades of Melville and Dassin). Among a series of terrific scenes, the "Modern Love" sequence is unforgettable.

The style is over the top from the first to the last scene. It's a 114 minutes videoclip, if you ask me. Well, Juliette Binoche is always charming, at least.

Best if taken as a swirling series of images and ideas than as conventional narrative; clearly attempts to ape Godard, but lacks the master's intensity and focus; perhaps slightly difficult to judge coherency on a first viewing, but it is often stunningly filmed with some great setpieces, especially the Bowie tribute and a nerve jangling skydiving sequence. Binoche is a simply stunning photographic subject and her and Levant make their purposely disjointed and incoherent relationship work.

Denis Lavant running down a street, inspired and cathartic, with David Bowie's "Modern Love" playing as the soundtrack, is magic.

Carax sure loves to film people running. A somewhat cryptic but beautiful film, both visually and tonally. Like the other Carax films I've seen I'm not quite on his wavelength but I still enjoy just sitting back and watching the characters go through their strange little stories. Fascinating cinema

A beautiful mixture of Godard and AIDS and science-fiction that seemingly rebuilds all of cinema history right before our eyes. Gorgeous compositions, and a sense of longing and fear that permeated my very soul. It's also just like the coolest movie ever made. The "Modern Love" sequence is transcendent. That could have been the whole movie for all I care.

I wanted to love this, but I found the way the main character acted if not ridiculous then certainly a deterrent to me investing myself in him. And though I enjoyed the playfulness of the film, at times it seemed to slip from playfulness into sillyness (the scene where he flips the car over...~cringe~). This all said, though the film didn't work for me as a whole there are some incredible scenes and the film looks great.

Surprised how much I liked this, considering how much I hated Holy Motors and how much of a self-conscious poser I think Lavant is. Despite being self-indulgent, bloated, poorly-paced, and Binoche being utterly pathetic, it just kind of has a natural, emotional flow to it that clicked with me in the second half.

There is serious artistry at work in this film, which might be a weakness as well as a strength. Anyway, serious artistry is my weakness (as it is my strength).

Carax's most amazingly shot film -- the scene with Lavant running, punching himself and finally falling in love with Binoche while Bowie sings Modern love; the incredible palette of red and gray -- starts as a low-key sci-fi and then develops into an absorbing tragedy of impossivle love. Flawed, but mesmerizing film -- Julie on the bike, Juliette running while Carax accelerates his final shot.

I was both amused and frustrated by this film, as I guess I'm a plot-first person and here even the characters seem to give up on the plot at times. Eventually, I just settled in with "this is a prettier version of Breathless" and went with it, and it got better.

It seeks to emulate the Nouvelle Vague in a lot of ways. It fails in most. The most spectacular failure is the Modern Love sequence which was of course the most hyped. Regardless, a good movie and a beautiful young Delpy.

The simple description of the plot - a orphan young boy that goes into criminal activities, and participates of a plan to steal certain products from a big company - might make it look like this would be an action/thriller. But the main focus and what makes the picture relevant isn't the plot, it's how it shows its characters and how relationships build up in a very sincere, honest and convincing way. Very interesting experience.

I suspect that Leos Carax is just not particularly for me. I've never disliked a film of his, and I can appreciate what he's doing, but I don't really ever connect to them. Same here ... though a sequence where Lavant run-dances to David Bowie's "Modern Love" is worth the price of admission.

Carax seems to reach a wonderful comfort with his poetic expressions. He allows focus to shift between a linear narrative and emphasis on characters’ existence and their relationships on screen. Certainly love remains a key driver here. There’s an honest reflection in the confinements of a young male, ventriloquist and known for slight of hand, giving up the infatuations of his youth, to fall in love again, while stealing a cure for STBO (AIDS), to cover a dead father’s debt.

Incredible soft lighting in grey sets that make their reds and blues as expressive as the faces of these beautiful actors; the Bowie sequence alone exemplifies the film as a masterpiece of style. But it's an airless experience, so self-indulgent in its pathos that everybody comes off as forever swooning. It's "cinema".

I wish Mauvais Sang's sci-fi world was more exposed, but the unique, almost ethereal atmosphere makes this memorable. Also it has the great Binoche, which makes up for the uh, rather non-photogenic Lavant.

Certainly not without flaws (fe. the parachute scene and the heist itself seemed unneeded and jarring), but color palette, framing, set design, mood and and some very inventive and gorgeous cinematic moments more than make up for it. This is an excersize in the joy of filmmaking. A pleasure to watch. It grows on me with every viewing and is set to be my favorite movie ever -someday.
