even though it was chosen as the best european film by FIPRESCI back in 2000, Ceylan's masterpiece is not as well known as Cannes triumphant Distant.

this reminded me of my childhood, the games i played with my cousins, walking in the fields, my grandfather and grandmother, the whole family gathering up and talking, innocent things, things that will not happen again..

Ceylan's infusion of slow-paced, low-key realism with a deconstructionist reflection on his own filmmaking process begs comparison to the work of Iranian contemporaries, and Kiarostami especially, and the money talk reminded me of Ray. Yet Clouds of May is distinctively atmospheric and thought-provoking, alluding to man's existential struggle with the slippage of time, and the budding auteur's mastery of still photography is prominent throughout. In fact, it's his best film prior to Climates.

Há 20 anos estreava na Turquia. Meu primeiro Ceylan e me lembrou... Kiarostami. Apesar de ter elementos que gosto no cinema metalinguístico de arte, este filme não me pegou por inteiro, quem sabe não fará mais sentido pra mim quando eu assistir os outros filmes da trilogia provinciana.
