Did you know?: In the poorly tested epilogue that was left on the cutting room floor, the Comanches return and mercilessly slaughter every last white man woman and child in McLintock, once and for all. Quite a tonal shift, I can see why it didn't make the final cut.

This germ of an interesting ideological Western (libertarian cattle baron Wayne backs Indians against big-government governor) becomes a geriatric Wild West version of "The Taming of the Shrew" ruined by the way McLaglen's direction magnifies all John Ford's minor faults (sentimentality, sexism, alcoholic humor, senseless donnybrooks, overplayed comedy, telegraphed punches and telegraphed punchlines) without sharing one of his great virtues. Wayne and O'Hara--for once--are lacking in chemistry.

Celebration of a long-past America, with alcohol and spousal abuse treated as jolly japes, where dudes are 'sissies', with minorities and Indians toiling happily under the benign stewardship of an Anglo patriarch and a world in which bygones are bygones. Good fun, if one can set aside the way times have changed.

Overall I liked this one quite a bit up to but not including the final showdown with the wife.

It seems that every western that Wayne was in that included comedic elements would turn out pretty entertaining. While the treatment of women here might be upsetting to younger audiences, but I had a fun time. Honestly, old John Wayne was the best John Wayne.

So McLintock finds out his wife is bitter over his drinking, cheating ways, figures the best solution is to chase her around town in order to humiliate her and give her a good spanking. What d'ya know, turns out he's right! This after handing a gang of disgruntled Indians a train-car full of weapons. Close curtain, we're good, folks. I enjoyed this fun movie until it degenerated to this, though it's not nearly as well-done as The Quiet Man.

I’m not particularly clear on what I’ve just watched. I finished this ten minutes ago and if someone were to ask me what the plot was I don’t know I’d really be able to tell them. Basically just kind of like an old west hangout movie with John Wayne, or like watching four or five consecutive episodes of a western-themed sitcom. Bizarre highlight: John Wayne standing a few feet away beaming with a delighted smile as a guy puts Wayne’s adult daughter over his lap and spanks her ass.

Incredibly silly by today's standards. A rough and tumble cowboy puts up with his headstrong wife. Events in the town add amusement and some authenticity. John Wayne is enjoyable in this, but I found Maureen O'Hara mostly annoying. Included a young Jerry Van Dyke and Yvonne De Carlo (before her Munster days) and Stefanie Powers is very beautiful in this. Some humor, but lots of silly outdated sensibilities and rather tiresome music.
