First off: Fuck all the illiterate so-called critics who lack the fundamental understanding of the medium to appreciate cinematic madness when faced with it. Secondly: No, it’s not a good film in the stickiest sense of the word, but it’s audacious and never boring. Plays like a modern reinterpretation of a lesser known Shakespeare play, and while 100% too full of itself, I applaud its existence.

I've been trying to get "corny" out of my vocabulary so this was a toughie. However it is exactly what you want out of a new borderline-vanity project by a major filmmaker, with a tone all its own though the obvious comparison is to Coppola's Dracula, another exercise in effects-heavy, high-concept expressionism that was a dud but everyone likes now.

As messy and incoherent as advertised, but in a perverse way, wouldn’t it be disappointing if it wasn’t? This is exactly what I want from an auteur’s end-of-career big swing; an ambitious, sprawling, over-stuffed (yet breathlessly compressed) smorgasbord of pet themes and virtuosic wonderments. The cast is a hoot-and-a-half, and then there’s Adam Driver in absolute top-form to such a degree that he even sells some of this screenplay’s crinkliest dialogue.

Hallucinogenic oscillation between high and low art, poisoned with the confusion of modern society. Actually has the dreamlogic of a Guy Maddin film, somehow even weirder.

Insane. Juvenile. Completely out of touch, but a hilarious spectacle. Adam Driver tried his best - his performance reminds me of his work in Annette. I think I’m glad I saw it?

Megalopolis is an ambitious, creative, sprawling mess of a film. I am so glad that I saw this in theaters. Visually it has a lot going for it, and even if it's not the late career masterpiece we wanted from Coppola I'm happy to support a big budget film this intent on being unique and original. That said the screenplay really is all over the place, and kills whatever potential this might have had. While I can't exactly recommend this, I will say it is definitely best viewed on the big screen.

You know how, when you're just waking up and are still half asleep, sometimes you have an idea that for about five seconds seems absolutely brilliant before you wake up a little more and realize it's incredibly stupid? I'm convinced they trapped Francis Ford Coppola in that 5 second period and had him make a movie.

The politics of dreaming, the politics of withdrawal, and the politics of resentment: a crude but not-nonsense way of understanding how our political world unfolds. And in a generally dreamless time, this cinematic ode to dreaming, to our capacity of imagination, and to how it motivates civilisation and travels faster than light, comes across as somewhat courageous, despite the craziness of its blueprint and transhumanist flavour, and its completely boring presentation of sexuality.

There is really nothing positive to say about Megalopolis, unless you count the fact that one will laugh several times at how ridiculously bad this movie is. Disjointed plot, bad acting (mainly due to a terrible script), poor special effects, try-hard camera angles like the ones I saw in first year of movie school. This movie really was 40 years in the making? One would have wished for a better outcome. Unfortunate proof that the director is old and evidently senile.

A weird take on humanity’s yet to be realized problems with enormous amount of sense dualism which makes watcher’s viewing experience puzzled: “did the author mean this or that”? Good acting performance and weak, sometimes illogical characters and their behaviour.

Tough to rate. At times painfully dull, constantly a bit ridiculous, but ambitious and not without a vision.

Disjointed, nonsensical, with naive privileged white boy ideas about humanity at its core. It's entertaining for the bizarre fucking dialogue and scenes coming out of nowhere. All the actors honestly do a great job but the script is simply too dumb. If you want to watch Adam driver be weird for hours I recommend.

Disastrous. I expected it to not work on a story level but as an experimental film it's laughable (you ALWAYS see the gears turning in his head: no surprise, no mystery, if something's almost interesting it gets explained into oblivion), as a philosophical treatise it's embarrassing (immensely heavy handed and clumsy), as a visual feast it's pathetic (often looks cheap and shoddy), as an ensemble piece it's a career low point for practically everyone. What a load of pompous lumbering horseshit.

Painfully bad, almost impossible to watch without laughing at the pseudo intellectual drivel and very elevated acting. Constantly talking about time, but I really do not believe there was anything interesting to say about time

It doesn't work at all as a conventional narrative. And I'm also not entirely sold on the claim by apologists that it's some abstract masterpiece. But I'll be damned if this isn't a heck of an experience. This is Cinema, and I'm glad it exists.

An incoherent, audacious, riveting, hilarious and most importantly unique movie. There are choices in dialogue, editing and acting that have not and will not be made ever again which makes every moment fresh and exciting even thought the overall plot is as straight as the avenues of New Rome that Cesar seeks to replace with his utopia.

Coppola going out in a blaze of glory, with no explanation or apology. Stop me if this sounds familiar: A visionary creative frustrated by the cowardice of the system, running out of time to produce his masterpiece, blind to his fatal flaws, and trusting foolishly in the better angels of human nature to see his dream realized. And if it can’t happen in real life, well, that’s why we make movies. Loathe to give a numerical rating. A deeply flawed, ridiculous movie; an enthralling experience.

What an absolutely convoluted mess of pretentious garbage. There is almost nothing redeemable about it - I thought based on the trailers that it would be at least a visual spectacle if nothing else, but even the visuals felt cheap and jarring, like a film student's first project. I wonder if there even was a script, scenes felt completely random and thrown together. I feel bad for the actors who signed on, they were probably utterly confused as to what they were supposed to be doing.

Risible. It's getting worse the more I think about it. I give it credit for trying something different but Jupiter's dick it falls flat. Adam Driver can't do everything, try as he might.

Really cool ideas, issue is whole movie just felt like a bunch of ideas mashed together. Every scene felt so disconnected from the last. Whole movie felt like it wasnt even saying anything. Acting was pretty fun but the accents dropping in and out threw me off too. Some really bad effects and some that worked with how the movie felt. Didn't feel like anything paid off in this movie, just left feeling like that was cool but not satisfied.

Not sure where I land with this one. It definitely felt like Coppola was trying here, and it certainly sticks with you after you leave the cinema. Better than Jack maybe? Hmmm perhaps, not sure.
