Feel good war propaganda that finds a path to the apolitical person's heart because dogs.

Semper Fi-do! A little over the top with the hoo-rah, and "yes master sergeant", at times, but excellent otherwise.

Considerably less interested in the actual war stuff because it's yet another American war story, so I'll just avoid commenting on the actual subject matter there. Instead, I'm more interested in the bond between Mara and Rex, which rings true for any animal lover regardless of their position in life. So in that sense, the second half or so is incredibly touching and relatable. Might take some cheap paths to get there but it gets there so I won't lie and say it didn't make me emotional.

Really ham-fisted but mostly harmless. There are some scenes that are surprisingly pretty strong but this is offshotted by the really lame ending and how quickly the PTSD was brushed off for that ending. I think they had something with the theme of PTSD but it wasn't something they pushed on too much and was secondary to the bond of the main protagonists. A shame, too, because that's a theme that films rarely delve into.

I'm a sucker for dog movies.

+10 because LOVE any positive about dogs. Functional, reasonable film. Elevated for dog lovers to heart warmer, tear jerking

Far too little time was spent showing the heroic war actions, and too much time was spent showing details of her personal life. I somehow liked it despite its many faults, and that was probably due to Kate Mara's performance.
